I'm surprised to hear you say this . I thought you loved your 4R.

I do really like the pic of the Jeep GC in your pics with the Daystar and BFG's , though I probably would opt. for the 6cyl if its a daily driver. Gas wont be getting any cheaper. It should give you the best of both worlds. If you want fast then keep the 4R and spend money on a fast car.

As far as the soccer mom / mall hopper every vehicle has them. Plenty of trucks , SUV's of all type's , ect..... at the mall and with women drivers.

Unless you are hell bound on getting rid of the 4R and getting a new vehicle I would have to agree with Even Steven. If the sulfer smell bothers you ( which I can understand) and you want to keep the 4R , I would get the complete exhaust redone with new cats , pipes . You also might want to have an exhaust shop look at it and see if they and bend it and do a side exit exhaust .

You will also take a huge beating on a trade in this economy with the 4R trade or sell. Prices on new vehicles you can get decent price on , but the depreciation of them drops like a rock , and talk about about being upside down quickly on a loan if you would do that.

Just my .02

You should take a Wrangler for a testdrive...it has come a long way in terms of civility with the current model.

Thank you very much for the info on replacing the cats. I will seriously look into this. However, I'm curious how it will affect the vehicle passing a smog check. More research is needed by me on this one.

You should have zero issues with passing a emission test with an aftermarket cat. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably even look for a hi-flow cat and free up a few horsepower as well. It's a win-win situation for you.... A few extra HP, maybe a bit nicer exhaust note, and no more fart smell from your tailpipe! What more could you ask for? LOL

I voted for something else...the H3 alpha.. chicks, Hummers.. what else could a guy ask for?

One other thing for me because I can turn my 4R in at the end if the lease in Feb.09 and walk away , but my plan is to buy it out and keep it as I will be 25K under what I leased it for and have no paid much (out of pocket) money for it. BUT sometimes I think , what the hell would I even get ??? I have an SUV built like a tank , extremely off road capable , hopefully long time reliability , a V8 with great gas milage , hold decent value.

What would I even get ? I dont like Nissan at all , Jeep / quality , H3 no power with the 5cyl. and totally crap milage with the v8. Tahoe , already have an old bomber that gets a good beating from my dad . Gm / Ford have nothing to offer .

I don't ever want to by new if possible , but the only thing that would appeal to me was an FJ or a Tacoma if I was going to buy. The new 4R is a mystery so I would miss the boat on that + I dont want anyhing 1st year out. A 4dr FJ would be nice.

I voted for you to keep your t4r. For something that is fixable, and a hole heck of a lot cheaper than going out and buying a new car. Really your one issue of "it smells bad" shouldn't even be an issue. Fix it. Or fine, trade it in or sell it, loose out on money and drive something else around until you find something about it you don't like.

I love my 4runner. If I couldn't have it I'd go to either a Tacoma or a FJ. I'd only get a Jeep if I got a better deal and only on a Rubicon. And I'd have to be slightly drunk. Everything looks prettier when you're slightly inebriated.

And on a different note: Speaking as a single girl and if you were one of my guy friends this is what my advise would be. If she wrinkles her nose over the smell out your SUV tailpipe, she's lacking in intelligence and maturity. Just wait until you accidently leak a smell out of your OWN tailpipe! Not the kind of woman I'd want to date a guy friend of mine. I watched a guy have "girlfriend failure" on the off road run I went on several weekends ago. He had to turn around and go home right before the BEST part of the whole dang trip! I don't know how awesome rugged men end up with princesses! For pete's sake...

Exactly. I suspect that he isn't being completely honest with us. He must have underlying issues with his 4Runner or he wouldn't be so quick to get rid of it over nothing more than a sulfer smell.

This is easily fixable and it's kinda funny that this thread got so out of hand. If the real issue is a sulfer smell, change the cat out and be done with it. If there's other issues other than the smell, then he should go ahead and buy whatever makes him happy.

I agree

OK Snap fess up here , is it only the sulfer smell ? Or are you just getting tired of it and want something new/different ? No harm in wanting that. either .

4Runner or bust

It was mainly that darn sulfur smell that had me pissed off.

There might be some small truth to the fact that I feel I made a error in buying a 2005 model less than 2 months before the 2006 ones showed up in dealerships.

:(

Well, today during my lunch break I went and checked out a Pathfinder. It's the first time I've checked them out since I bought my 4Runner almost 3 years ago.

Luckily I wasn't very hungry... because after sitting in one I lost my appitite.

:bonk:

Those that think a Pathfinder is equal in any way to a 4Runner need to see an eye doctor. Yuck.

And after my brief period of insanity, I've pretty much decided to do whatever I need to do to stay in a 4Runner.

:driving:

Thank you all for the support and suggestions.

Congrats on staying with the 4Runner. I hope you get everything worked out so you love the vehicle.

I am glad you are keeping your 4R , BUT you only have to answer to yourself , do what works for you.

If you would have bought an 06 , you'd still smell sulfer....lol.

Thanks Thai!
Educated women know the difference between real class and faked class. And hey Snap, if I saw a cute guy with a smelly 4Runner and a really drop dead gorgeous guy with a Pathfinder, I'd give my number to the 4Runner guy! Then I'd tell him, "Hey I know how to get rid of the sulfer smell. Wanna go get some new pinstripes on the forest trail?"

That's not really a good example.

It's more like "what kind of woman would continue to date someone after she finds out he farts every time he walks?" And she'd find this out after the first or second date. An ocassional fart is one thing, but to constantly fart every time you move...

I don't know about you, but my 4Runner only "farts" during hard acceleration. If I drive normally, I don't get any sulfer smell at all....at least that I can smell. Is yours really THAT bad that it stinks constantly? If so, hurry up and get that aftermarket cat!!
