4Runner vs Pilot

hehe. my father ended up with a pilot, they had bought an odyssey the year or two before. anyways, they looked at the 04 4runner and the 04 pilot. they ultimately chose the pilot as it had fewer blind spots for my mother. my dad comments every time he sees mine and says how he really likes it and wishes he had it instead. last time I saw him we were talking about the engines in the two (I've got an 03 4r 2wd v8) and he did comment that the pilot was a bit underpowered to what he'd prefer. he drove mine and stepped out smiling. I just about had to pry the keys from his fingers. ;):

I seriously considered the Pilot.

I liked the ride and the room. The pilot is bigger than my 4runner.
And I could have gotten a new 03 EX with leather and a navigation system for about the same price as my 03 V8 Sport.

When i looked at the +'s and -'s side by side. The 4runner was for me all the way. Not to say that someone else doing the same comparison wouldn't see things differently.

Unit Body Construction - pilot
Frame construction + 4runner

Independant rear - pilot
Solid rear axle + 4runner

Real 4WD system + 4runner
some crazy thing that only works up to 18mph - pilot

third row seat - pilot
No third row + 4runner

NO FACTORY SUNROOF OPTION - pilot
Sunroof +4runner

V6 - pilot
V8 + 4runner

I ratioanalized it to my girl that we needed a V8 for towing. My quad and the trailer weigh a total of 1000 lbs. I just wanted it. Love the head snaping back. After having it for 7 months we both want to get rid of the 4cyl accord she drives every day.

The pilot is a great alternative to a mini-van. Thats all it is.

unless you truly have something against third row seating, this shouldn't be too much of an issue since the third row folds completely flat in the pilot..

It's just everything else that's an issue!;):

Don't want to be a chauffeur!

I didn't compare the two. My wife did and said she liked the "man's truck" better. That made me happy and sold me on the 4Runner!

Honda Pilots are OUTSTANDING vehicles! They are not really comparable to 4Runners, however. You're comparing two vehicles which were designed for completely different uses. As someone said, the Highlander is Toyota's competitor for the Pilot, but as much as I love Toyotas, my opinion is that the Pilot excells over the Highlander. MUCH more interior space (more than the 4Runner), smooth car-like ride, better suspension, and more responsive engine.

A very good friend of mine purchased a Pilot shortly after we bought our 4Runner. They needed a car-based SUV for hauling kids around town. NOT pulling anything with it, NOT four-wheeling, etc, just good, reliable, spacious, comfortable transportation for the daily commute. Just once, he wanted to see what it's true limitations were, so we took the Pilot on a little test ride to one of our local hill-climbs. I must say, I was impressed with the way the Pilot handles on rough terrain. Not good on the steeps, obviously, but it did much better than I expected it to. Quite comfortable on washboard roads too, or racing down the bumpy irrigation ditch-riders roads. We hit a nice dip doing about 45 mph and launched it, but the Pilot sucked it up really well. After that little incident, we thought it was time to take the brand-new Pilot back home to mamma.

Also, there is no rear side curtain option for the Pilot. After learning that, we test drove the MDX but hated it. I know it is shares a platform with a minivan, but for 40K I would expect it not to drive like one. Yes, it has 260 horsepower, but in my opinion VTEC is not well suited for an SUV weighing 2 tons. Low end torque? Yeah, right.

I don't know about that since the V6 4R has VVT-i and the V8 will have VVT-i next year...

I have to give credit where credit is due; Honda really does make some nice, reliable, and much more affordable vehicles. However even though I had, and loved a CR-V I bought sometime back, the Honda Passport that I traded my CR-V for (which was the biggest mistake in my life) really left a huge bad taste in my mouth with Honda's. Lemons are the worst for it makes it hard to go back to that manufacturer again.

...and Honda did not design or build the Passport, just put a badge on it, raised the price $1k and shortened the warranty.

4runner vs pilot

it was really helpful to read these reviews. i too thought about the pilot but am purchasing a 4runner this weekend. this time the vehicle is my choice (my hubby made me drive a volvo wagon for the last four years and i'm really happy he totalled it.. no injuries, just broken cars). thought i'd throw that in since there we're a couple complaints about boring old wives with no sense of adventure and fun. did i mention my new 4runner is sr5, 4x4, 5spd., piaa fog lights and everything else imaginable? oh yes, and my hubby doesn't get to drive it.

Just curious, what does "hubby" drive?

emilyd, if hubby is a good boy, at least give him a ride, every now and then.

My wife likes the comfortable passenger seat, our Auntie likes the rear seat, especially the head room. My Daughter and Son-in-law, got their noses out of joing at the prospect of riding in one of those terrible SUV's, but one ride, and it's the family vehicle of choice for going places.

I, too looked at the Pilot and, after almost a year am happy with the 4Runner.

A friend at work has a Pilot and has had problems, timing belt tensioner failed, transmission is acting up and they have been stranded several times with a dead engine, brakes at 25k, and tires a bit too often, including uneven wear, with several trips back to the dealer to get things done right. The dealer has been slow in diagnosis and repairs, in general. The dealer has been telling them that their warranty has been at risk because they have been using an independent Honda mechanic for some of their service. On one service that they did have done at the dealer, they brought their own oil, Mobil 1 5w-20, the correct viscosity, specified by Honda. The dealer changed the oil as asked, but used their oil, told him Honda does not recomment synthetic, and they used 10w-30. The dealer said they have local knowledge and that's what they uese for every thing and owners should not try to 'direct service'. I changed the oil in my driveway and found that the Mobil 1 filter was still on the engine, not a Honda filter. ...back to the dealer for another refund. I think that there are several Honda dealers around here with big heads and this one is one of them.

I let my friend drive my 4Runner home, last week, and I drove his Pilot. Now after driving the Pilot for three years, he's going this week end to look at a 4Runner, too. I did not think the Pilot drove so well, it droned at freeway speeds and wondered around, had spongy breaks and you had to rev the hell out of the engine to get any power. It felt like I was driving a Rubber-Maid packing crate.

By the way, the belt tensioner problem ate the Pilot engine, the dealer has the vehicle for a month and it never ran as well, got worse mileage and made several trips back for leaks, dead battery and eratic shifting. They made him sign one hell of a repair order, saying that it was because it may not be covered by warranty and they would not look at it without a signature. They made a big deal about going through his service records for the engine failure, because he was possibly using 'sub-standard service' by going to a factory trained independent mechanic. They also got their nose out of joing because he had a bunch of Internet print outs about the problem and copies of all Honda's factory service notes.

He had one good comment about the dealer, they washed his Pilot almost every time they had it for more than a day.

I think that Honda makes good vehicles but the problem is that you have to buy them for a Honda dealer.

4runner vs pilot

hubby drives a lovely timberline gt bicycle to the train station to get to and from work. the dipstick was quite drunk when he totalled the volvo. another idiot left there broken down heap in the slow lane (did i mention hubby is a granny driver?) on the freeway (no shoulder) on a somewhat blind turn. although after seeing the skidmarks and stuff i think it was still avoidable. anyway, that's why he doesn't get to drive. It's girl's only inthe driver seat. fortunatly our daughters won't be driving for sometime (ages 4 in aug. and 1 insept.).
