Chalk up one more reason to NEVER own a mini van!!

I've always been a bit concerned with the safety on these 4R's actually. Our other vehicle is an XC90 and while I know Volvo's safety reputation is the best out there, the build quality between the two is extremely noticeable, which always concerned me a bit.

Very cool, definitely should give 4R drivers some piece of mind. This is one of the biggest reasons that I drive a 4R because of it's size and build quality

As for Mini-Vans....The IIHS tested the Toyota Sienna and determined that it was the safest passenger vehicle on the road. It did better then ANY Volvo or any other manufacturer.

Looking at the IIHS website, it appears the Sienna is a great choice, but the ratings still weren't at the Volvo level, but, hard to tell with them being in different categories, minivan vs large SUV. Both were top safety picks in their respective categories though, which is cool.

Here's an interesting thing you should know about Volvo. They kind of reverse-engineer their vehicles. Here's a snippet from this article: Designing Safer Bodies The Volvo Way : Automotive Design & Production


"In creating the new S40 compact sedan, Volvo conducted virtual crash tests on prototypes without engines and then rearranged auxiliary components like batteries and brake boosters to fit the crushed engine room space, rather than designing the space to fit the existing engine configuration. By taking this unconventional approach the S40 gained 200 mm of crush space for occupants even though the vehicle's overall length was reduced by 48 mm compared with the previous model. And Broberg says of the forthcoming XC90 V8: "We went so far in demanding that a transverse-mounted V8 meet our crush requirements that we could not find an appropriate engine in the entire Ford Motor Company group that would not require us to change the packaging." So they designed a new compact 60º unit that measures only 25 in. wide to fit inside the crush envelope."

this is the reason that body mount under the front occupancy area is so long (sticks out so far behind the front tires) notice the mini fans tire folded up into the rocker panel causing the front occupancy space to collaps. i can deffinantly see now why all that extra metal is on the body mount.

This thread has me thinking a bit about the safety of these aftermarket bumpers. The crush factor is significantly less then the stock bumpers so if you do hit something, make sure its gonna be something else that crumples real well and not something too solid

My spinal cord will act as the crush factor as soon as I install my shrockworks bumper next week LOL

My 82 yo mother-in-law.....drove home from the mall and into her garage with a car looking like that...She was hit while parked at the mall. She walked up to the car from the drivers side..not seeing the other side. Drove all the way home. She thought something was wrong with the car. She called me up and said something was wrong with the car (it wasn't handling right). She still never looked at the other side of the car. I went over there and saw her car. The whole side of her car behind the front seat was demolished. The rear wheel was almost falling off. When I showed it to her...she had no idea what happened. She told me where she went. I went over to the mall and luckily it was all on security cameras. The drunk who hit her was arrested later that night for a hit and run.

Damn that is crazy. Glad she was in the mall when it happened. You think the interior would have be just as damaged. Curious question: Were you able to see the security tape or was a police report needed?
