4th Gen iPad/Tablet Mount

I do not take credit for this idea. My friend Trung has this in his 4th gen and I mirrored it after his setup.


I previously posted a few pictures of a recent mount that I installed in my dash for an iPad or a Tablet and received some inquiries on how I did it. So, here's how I did it:


Mounts
RAM base plate adapter-

RAM X-grip-

Go to the RAM website and it will help you figure out what iPad/tablet mount you will want. I picked this one and it works for me, but there are cheaper options that will still have the same function.


Steps
1. Take your dash apart.
-This is the first time I have ever done this without the help of someone else. It can seem intimidating at first, but literally all you need to do is take out three or four 10mm bolts. I am not going to list each step one-by-one, because it's all on this 7min YouTube video:

It takes all of 15mins.

2. Line up your base plate adapter just under the hazard lights. I used a punch pin on one hole, drilled that one out, then bolted it to the dash. Then, I continued doing them one hole at a time until all 4 were done, while attempting to keep the base plate as straight as possible.
Here is what I used:
#10-32 x 3/4in Round Head Combo Machine Screws
#10-32 Stainless Nylon Lock Nuts
2 washers that fit (lol)

You have limited room on what backing you can use here, so I did two larger washers and two smaller washers. My buddy used a rectangular piece of steel for the backing, use whatever you can with the limited room. Obviously the stronger the backing, the better chances you have of how sturdy this is while driving on bumpy roads/trails.

3. Put it all back together, you're done.



Notes
Overall, this was not a difficult project at all. I would rate this a 1/10 difficulty, anyone can do this.
RAM website helps narrow down what actual iPad/tablet mount you will want.

Looks great, I had a Proclip Ipad mount but only swap that in when I am on a off road trip. The rest of time I have the Garmin using that mount.

I was really considering one of those floor/seat bolted mounts... but this looks pretty good too.

Any testing off-road to see how it holds up to vibration or terrain chop?

From my experience 1" ball doesn't hold up that well with a bigger load when you start throwing it around. We are running larger diameter ball mounts in the sports side x side, but that also tends to be a much rougher high speed ride. We also had to reinforce the plastic bits for the ball adapter with some thinner metal plate to help with rigidity.

We also had to reinforce the plastic bits for the ball adapter with some thinner metal plate to help with rigidity.

Haven't checked yet, I literally just did this on Monday. It seems incredibly sturdy, but I'll know for sure the next time I go on a ride and will update with findings.

I have a RAM mount on the lower part of my center console for my ham radio setup and it handles everything its been through from high speeds in Pismo dunes to crawling the waterfalls up Big Bear.

Update on durability:

I have not driven off-road with it yet, but I did drive 2hrs 45mins to the other part of Florida today and back. 0 noticeable issues, one part around town had a road that was probably 1.5 miles and was bumpy as hell.

No complaints thus far. We are going on a trip to GA in two weeks, will update with the strength of this mount after that trip.

I don't recommend the floor seat RAM mount, I currently have it set up to hold the head unit of the ID-5100a. It wobbles far too much and the only solution would be using a bracket to secure it to the center console but we'd be back to square one with drilling. If I were to do all over again, I would have just directly mounted a different RAM mount to the console.

I did the exact same except I wasn't smart enough to buy nylon locking nuts (just regular nuts with threadlocker). I did however also buy the Ram mount double sided tape to add additional strength. Had it mounted for my entire trip to Alaska including driving the crater filled Dalton Highway without issues with my iPad Pro 11. I plan on installing a new double din next week so I'll swap out the nuts with nylon locking ones for added security.

There is no need to disassemble the whole dash. After taking out the HVAC controls you can drill the holes and put the screws in with the large cover piece in place. Much easier. I put a metal plate on the back to re-enforce the plastic a bit. Rock solid.
