4th Gen Off-Roaders

I know the majority of 4th Gen owners here don't wheel much at all but I know there are some that do. Who does? How much? What kind of trails? How's your truck looking as a result?

I'm in Colorado so I wheel a lot, no longer doing real hard stuff but tend towards "moderate" trails since I sold my Land Cruiser. I've passed 190k miles and overall my trucks in pretty good shape, an assortment of small dents and lots of scratches.

Haha, I did that once! Slippery descent with a large ditch in the middle. I tried to _gently_ cross the ditch, but as soon as my wheel started down it slid all the way in. It was a tense moment!

Also in Colorado and this was my first season wheeling with my 4Runner... or at all for that matter. Spent a weekend at Moab. Did a couple passes in Buena Vista. Metberry Gulch near the Springs.
 
I see a lot of talk about lifts and tires here but for some reason I keep missing all the talk of gears and lockers. What do you true offroaders use?

Yeah, the folks I was with wanted to know if I'd mention it to my wife or not. I showed her the video and her comment was - "Nice recovery!"

Not something a guy wants to do often.

Speaking only for myself I run stock gears and no lockers of this truck.

Not lot of need to reagear unless you're running around 35" tires. I believe most people run a rear air locker (ARB seems popular) if they are running a locker.

The 4Runner is a pretty good expedition/offroader with some relatively minor mods. The driver is really the common limiting factor in what they can do.

v8 only or v6 too? I am really close to buying one of these rigs to offroad, I been riding a rzr1000 and just want a bit more comfort (heat and room for 4 with gear) I know this won't go where that went but it will go see some cool places none the less. Keep the pics coming that's motivation.
 
I wheel my truck pretty hard but dont have any good pictures of technical situations. Came back from a long trip a few weeks ago traveling from the east coast of Canada to Socal. The only damage I have are a few dents and scratches + I tore off my exhaust for the 4th time this weekend on a large boulder.Most of the trails we wheel around here are tight wooded , rocky and muddy!

I go off-roading pretty often, I try to go every other week. I've gotten a lot of battle scars so far. I love hitting the trails!

The 1GR-Fe is a good engine and does pretty well, the debate rages on quite a while when compared to the beefier 2UZ-FE. The main take-away is that the V6 needs to rev a bit higher to get it's torque and the V8 tends to have a bit more torque more readily available at low RPMs. For the majority of people, this isn't a big issue and on the trails you'll probably be in low gear ranges anyways so acceleration isn't as big a deal.

I would say test drive one of each and make your determination based on that.

Probably the same way I do, go straight ahead! (I had another time that was as bad as the above guy's nearly s*** a brick because I didn't see the 1~2ft hole that sucked up my left front tire, the momentum almost made me think I was going to flip the 4Runner!)

Wheeled the poop out of my Pathfinder for a good 8 years in Colorado and many trips to Moab, but I just switched to the 120 platform and haven't been on too many trails with her (yet!).

Sorry, no good pic's yet.

Weston Pass (not really 4WD trail, but I had a wee bit of weight behind me):

I found the 33+ tires, the Toytec CO and rear MT LT kit, and the ATRAC system to be quite capable in various situations. I can't wait to put it all through it's paces next wheeling season. I don't like snow bashing so I don't venture out much in winter months but I am part of a winter emergency driver group through my employment and that can be quite a hoot in a couple feet of snow.

I have some plans for armor over the winter and then I'll take her up on my usual local trails (Twin Cone, Red Cone, China Wall, Cascade Creek...) and hopefully a good trip to Moab in the spring (I hear Hell's Revenge beckoning me hither).

I've been running with the same basic group for the past 7 years, so I tend to not post up much or catch runs with other folks, but I'm more than up for meeting some new peeps (especially around Colorado Front Range area).

Like the wheel size. Did they require a lot of trimming?
 
I try to get out as often as possible but I'm usually solo so I tend to avoid anything too crazy. Looking forward to harder trails as I build the rig up though and meet up with more people locally. I bought this thing to off road it, and that's exactly what I'm going to do.

Thanks man. Minimal front bumper trimming and relocating wheel well liners up front. Moderate trimming of all 4 mudflaps (that will get removed when I step up in tire size in about 2 years). I did a poop-ton of trimming on my old Pathy, so I am not upset with this amount so far.
