4th Gen Sport brakes (338mm big brakes) on 3rd Gen??
So I did some reading on the TBU as well as parts comparing, and I ran across something interesting while I was searching stuff:
The Tundra 231 calipers (13WL) have a relative (13WH) that has the exact specs, except slightly longer mounting tabs because it uses a 338mm rotor vs. the 3rd gen/Tundra's 319mm rotor. These brakes came on 4th Gen Sport Edition 4Runners. This means a bigger rotor for more stopping torque, plus all the other benefits of the regular TBU!
The only difference that I saw in any of the parts is the rotor height. It is ~70.4mm for Tundra rotors, and ~67.4mm for the 4th Gen sport rotors. I would have to see these side-by-side to compare, so I may go to a parts store to do just that. If it's just a 3mm difference in installed height, that would move the whole braking surface 3mm outboard, meaning that the caliper would need to move with it, since it's a 4-piston and not a floating caliper. A 3mm spacer between the mounting ears of the caliper and the mounting pad on the spindle should do just that, so this may be an even better upgrade than the TBU. The caveat here is that 17" wheels would be REQUIRED. I have FJ wheels, so I'm in the clear.
What do you all think? Am I bat-shit crazy, or am I on to something great here?
