4x4 ACTUATOR 07 4runner

It took 2 days for local Toyota-dealer to tell me I needed a new 4x4 actuator because my 4runner would not go into-4x4! They quoted me at $1,800 for parts/labor. I found this "HIGH". Being 63 an on fixed-income I can't afford it, an really miss my 4x4 (have a lot of snow here).
Can anyone tell me: could I put a new actuator in myself say from a junk-yard? Is it real time-consuming? Should I just forget it since my truck has 73,000miles on it? Where is this "actuator" located exactly?

What year 4Runner do you have? Anyway, this info for a 4th gen (2003--2009)

$1800 seems about right. It's not an easy job. For less (maybe) you can get another transfer case from a yard. Before you do that, have you tried "tapping" it while it's trying to engage? That works for MANY on here!

Hope it works out for ya! Just use a mallet/screw driver and tap or MILDLY hit it. You don't want to break it, then you might have a REAL problem.

Yeah try the tapping process it's just froze up and no don't give up with 73k you have 200 to go before she's broke in haha hope it works
