i have a 94 4runner with 128k miles on it. it has the 3.0 v6, a/t and 4x4. a week or so ago i started having troubles with the front diff. i would start to here what sounds liek a relay opening and closing over and over again...sounds like its right behind the instrument cluster. and when it would start clicking, i would hear a sort of grinding in the front end and then all of the sudden, it would pop real hard and loud. so i took it to a mechanic frined of mine and he disconnected the vaccum hoses to the front diff that engaged the front axles...i think this realy controls the vaccum engaged front axles when i engage the t-case with the shifter lever. i need to find this realy...any ideas? or is this some other problem?
thanks

When you find that relay let me know. It is some where behind the cluster, have not found it myself yet. I had the same problem. I swicthed the hoses (top to bottom) then put new ones on. My unit works now but I think the actuator is getting worn and will have to rebuilt soon. I can tell my front diff is engaged when I hear the click (light burnt out)

i found th erelay that was clicking like crazy. it says fuel pump relay on it. i guess that isnt my 4x4 problem. however, the realy is taken outand it still runs fine. so im completely baffled.

when you swapped the position of the hoses . did that fix the problem or did the new hoses fix it?
