4x4 not disconnecting as it should on my 2004 4runner

Hello everyone.

I am pretty new on the forum. I just got 4 new tires on my 4runner 04 v6 4x4, the size are 265/70/r17 on stock rims and no lift done so far. they put the tires and did alignment. once they were ready and jump into my truck I saw that 4x4 was activated in H4 and lights were flashing. I did try to deactivate the 4x4 and lights kept flashing and 4x4 activated, I did try to move the truck and It was like I had the brakes on. truck were no moving on reverse or drive it was just stock. then I turned the wheel all the way to the right and 4x4 deactivated.

tried to activated the 4x4 and it did work but once I turned the wheel it got stock and truck didn't move.

at this point the guys at the shop have no idea what is going on.

I need help.

Did you get an Owner's Manual when you purchased the vehicle? There is a certain set of steps to engage and disengage the 4WD system (I believe there's also a paper card in your driver's side sunvisor that explains the procedures as well.) Though it sounds like the 4WD actuator and/or ADD may be a bit sticky. I would have someone with a rubber mallet tap on the actuator and/or transfer case (it doesn't have to be hard) to loosen the actuator up. I would then exercise it a little and see if that helps things out, these vehicles like many other 4WDs suffer issues when the system is not regularly used/engaged.

I was using the 4x4 this past weekend on the beach and it was working just fine. I was able to engage and disengage with not problem as well as turn the wheel with no problem. the whole deal started today after getting new tires and alignment.

I just don't know what to. I am taking it to a 4x4 shop to see if they know anything.

Are you turning the wheels on dry pavement? Is the center diff locked?

when I got into my truck the 4x4 was engaged already. I was testing in a dry pavement with the guys at the tire shop and I had the Vsc off.

Can you explain a little bit more about the center diff locked.

I just use 4x4 went I go to the beach and don't know much about it.
