4X4 service

I'm new to this Fourm and wanted to find out what is a 4x4 service? My dealer told me that I needed to have a 4x4 service on both ends of my 2001 4runner. He told me that they would change the fluids and replace the gaskets for the low, low price of $279.00, that seemed high to me but thought I would ask those that have more experience that I have.

He's talking about servicing the differentials.

Yep, drain and refill front and rear differentials and transfer case. Technicians get paid a half-hour per for a total of 1.5 hours or $150. Then you have about 8-9 quarts of gear oil and drain and fill plug gaskets (6 total). It adds up quick and most people turn it down when I try to upsell it, but their price is right about where we sell them for as well.

Maintenance Interval as per Toyota is every 15,000 miles.

You can do it yourself. You'll need a 24mm socket on a decent sized breaker bar, 10mm allen key socket, 6 drain/fill plug washers and around 8 quarts of oil.

Remove lower drain plug and let drain. Replace plug with new washer (make sure to wipe the magnet clean, its there to collect small metal filings). Remove fill plug and fill until the fluid is level with the fill hole (it will start to come out of the fill hole) and zip the fill plug back in after replacing the washer.

As for the leaks, some are easy, some not so much. Find out more details about the leaks.

Tip - make sure you can get the Fill plug out before you remove the Drain plug !

I made this mistake once.... Truly a FML moment. Although this was on a heep, ended up using a spare diff cover I had laying around cause it was a D30.

Another tip: Use a 6 point socket, NOT a 12 point.

If you don't have a 24mm socket, an SAE 15/16ths socket will work too.
