My 4x4 Is Engaged, Can't Turn Off - Any ideas? The light on the dash is blinking and I can't seem to get any activity out of my differential.

What are you doing when trying to disengage it? Putting it into Neutral at either a compete stop, or slightly rolling?

I usually just stop and push the 4x4 button on the shifter. I also noticed, my differential button does not have any activity when pushed. No lights on dash. Should I try rolling in neutral?

First off, what year is your truck? Listing the specifics will help any issue be resolved faster so we know what we are looking at.

good point...

I keep it in tip top changing all fluids on time and on going preventative maintence. I would consider my truck nearly mint.

I have an 07 so it might be different, and someone with a 3rd generation can chime in to correct me if I am wrong. But on 4th gens you need to be in Neutral to engage/disengage 4X4 otherwise it just beeps, and does not engage. It was a similar process on my 94 explorer, except that you had to go in reverse to disengage it. Try putting it into Neutral at either a stop, or letting it roll very slowly then engaging it. Have you looked at the manual?

Thank you for the advice. I have engaged the 4x4 in drive in the past, but have heard neutral is a safer bet. I'm heading out to try the roll trick as you are the third person with just that advice. Cheers!

:iagree: with Josh. "N" will work many times engaging it but not so good for disengaging. Switching to and from low range needs to be done in "N" but 4hi to 2hi and 2hi to 4hi can be done on the fly. Under 62mph is recommended for the switch from 2hi to 4hi. Once the mode is selected speed at your discretion.

thank you , chris!

do you know if driving in 4wd in dry conditions is damaging?

An '01-present should have no issues provided the diff lock button isn't pushed, that's one of many very cool things about the '01-present. In fact you can use 4lo on the dry also (no diff lock).

I mentioned diff lock twice, I'm referring to the OEM diff lock switch that locks the center or transfer-case differential.

This is a great FAQ post that'll help clear it up even more: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?threadid=12
