4x4 use on 96 sr5

How can i tell if my 4x4 is working?
We got hit with snow today, so i decided to put it on 4x4, but didnt notice a difference...

sorry, its my first 4x4 vehicle.



BTW, its a 96 sr5 4 runner 4x4 automatic.

Do you have a lever or button type 4wd? If it's in 4wd, the little green light should light up on the dash.

I have the shifter itself on it. (lever) NO BUTTON.
I hear a relay or something inside the dash board everytime i switch to 4x4, but for some reason the front wheels arent locking.


It sucks in the snow. Im very dissapointed. The guy that sold it to me told me the shit worked fine.

An easy way to check if 4wd is engaged or not is to raise ONE front wheel into the air (use your bottle jack) and try to rotate it by hand. If it rotates then 4wd is not engaged. If you can't rotate it, put that wheel down, raise the other side and try to rotate it too. If both wheels can not rotate then 4wd is working.
Make sure you are in Park and 4H or 4L, with the engine off.
Also, this may sound silly, but check that free wheeling hubs have not been fitted.

Wouldn't it be easier if you just look to see if the front drive shaft is spinning?

ok, so i lifted the truck and front wheels spin freely while on 4x4.
low and hi.

I had my wife put it on Hi4 and drive forward and i notice the small shaft by the tranfer case turns. When i set it back to normal 2 wheel drive, the shaft doesnt turn, so im assuming my transfer case is good.
I dont get it...

HELP PLEASE.....

Okay, so like you said, the transfer case is probably good because it spins the front prop shaft, so that tells me that the auto-locking hubs are not working. Since you are new to 4wds, the front hubs are a device that connects and disconnects the front wheels to the front axels. This allows the front wheels to turn without making the axels and diff turn when in 2wd. Reduces wear and tear and improves ecomonmy. Your hubs are not connecting the axel to the wheel.
I am yet to learn how the 4runner hubs work, so I would try doing a search on this forum for automatic locking hub problems and see if any others can help from here.

Yeah i just spoke to the guy that sold me the truck and he said he'll take it to his mechanic to take care of the problem, since he had told me the 4x4 was working fine.
