5100, Toytec BOSS or Icon with FJ springs

5100, Toytec BOSS, Radflo or Icon with FJ springs

I got some free FJ trailteams suspension from a friend that has under 50 miles on it. It's the front springs/shocks and the rear springs, but no shocks. The shop kept them.

I intend to upgrade to a full lift kit in the future, but it will be a while. Since I need rear shocks I am deciding what to go with. I know everyone seems to run 5100 with the FJ springs, but since I intend to get a real lift someday, should I just get Toytec BOSS, Radflo or Icon rear shocks now?

I dont know how it will ride with the FJ springs, anyone have a set up like this?

I've had the FJ spring/5100 setup (1.75 setting on front, 1.5" spacer in the rear, 2.5" lift overall) on my 4th gen for the last 90k. In my opinion, the FJ coils are a pretty good improvement over the 4th gen coils alone. Not to mention the 5100s are a much better shock than OEM. Honestly, it's a pretty good budget setup and I have had my 4runner all over the southwest with no problems. However, I run Icons on my 5th gen and there is a pretty big difference when you get to that level.

I think I am leaning toward the Icons in the rear. Seems to be a tried and trusted shock. Then someday I will get the Icon front coils to match. I know the 5100s are also very tested with the FJ springs, but I hate buying stuff twice and can afford the Icon rears right now.

If it were me I would go with the bilsteins as they would match the quality of the the front set a little more. Yes rear icons would be better but if/when you go to upgrade the fronts to a matching icon setup now you have older rear shocks vs new icons when you upgrade.

5100. I'm much happier with the ride quality and they're holding up very well. I couldn't get used to the digressive valving in the Icons - when they started leaking badly I had a reason to replace them.
