meh. don't feel bad, I sold my 2014 Tundra Platinum and bought an 05 T4R V6, main reason was to carry my dogs better, now I'm hooked and can't stop thinking of what to do it.
5th gen for a 3rd gen 4runner?

Think about it this way, the payment is always going to be there, every single month, maintenance and repair is going to be a concern, but not a guarantee, I've gone months at a time just cruising around in my 3rd gen running like a top. Some people like to have the newest thing out there at any time, but the 3rd gen has a lot of creature comforts without being too overbearing in the electronics department. IMO it's perfect, but everybody's opinion is different.
And really, when you boil it down, not much has changed over the course of the last 15 years when it comes to the mechanical side of things.

At the time I was looking there was no clean 3rd gens to my liking. The one's I found where just to overpriced for me. That's why I ended up just buying a new 5th gen. Now It's like I see nice clean 3rd gens EVERYWHERE !!
I prefer the look of a 3rd gen. Especially a white or green one.

OP it comes down to what you think will best fits your needs. You can find a nice 3rd gen there is actually one right now on CL with 160,000 miles. They run on the higher side of things up here, usually around 7-9K. And yes things happen and will need to be replaced but if your in no hurry and wait for the right one and realized maintenance will need to be done then you should be fine. I see plenty of 3rd gens still bombing around town, they 3.4 engine is truly breaking the 22re as the ol iron horse engine, 20mpg is about average for the ones that aren't highly modified and if your lucky you can find a 5-speed if you so choose.

I loved my 5th Gen, but I understand what you are saying. I paid as much for rent as my car payment so i'm aware of it. I went from a 3rd gen to a 5th (for a variety of reasons which are in my build thread on the 3rd gen) and i'm now back to a 3rd Gen and I am happy with it beyond words. 2000 Limited with 118k miles on it, timing done 20k ago and will keep it till it dies (or i put another engine in it.. =D).
But debt is debt and i'm aware of it and some of it is my choices i've made. I went from 6 figures a year to no income for the next 2 years. Something i've tried to express to my son is that you should manage what you have and look at want versus need. Above all is you have to be HAPPY, if your happy with a newer vehicle and looks kick ass(which I loved) than do it. If you aren't happy and would be happier with an older vehicle and less debt so you have more money month to month, gotta do what you feel is best.
I will let you know that the bank took my 4runner back from me and I owed 40,380.00, they got 35,670 at auction. I was shocked at what it went for at auction. So if you do try to sell it, keep that in mind. I wish you the best of luck.

I'm sorta picky about the 3rd gen.I'm willing to travel a bit(ROAD TRIP) to pick one up if it's super clean. Would like to find one that stock or not that heavily modified.
Ouch I'm assuming your 4runner was a Limited? My main drive to wanting to get out of the payments is that I eventually would like to move back to Portland and buy a house. But with the current crazy housing market that's currently go on in Portland. It looks like it'll be awhile before I can move back. Was talking to some friends and realized that if I hadn't purchase my 4Runner and did the things I did to it. I could of had enough for a decent down payment on a little house. WHY CAN'T I HIT THE LOTTERY !!!
Nope mine was a TEP with all the bells and whistles because I use the locker and such. Here is what it was looking like before my life slid sideways.

Anyways good for you, I grew up and did the same thing. I could of bought anything from anyone -with a payment. Instead I found a used 4runner for under 10k. I don't know if you've ever driven a 3rd (i've had 2 before my 4th gen v8) but it's a tank, excellent truck but, it's kinda sluggish and slow on the highway compared to what you're probably used to in the 5th, so don't limit yourself to the 3rd. I hated the look of the 4th gens but it's grown on me.
