Remote start is an explicit exception to #1 (unattended running vehicle): TRANSPORTATION CODE CHAPTER 545. OPERATION AND MOVEMENT OF VEHICLES. That's the whole code; I didn't want to link a third-party site. Search for "545.404" for the specifics under (b) which state:

(b) The requirements of Subsections (a)(1), (2), and (3) do not apply to an operator who starts the engine of a vehicle by using a remote starter or other similar device that:
(1) remotely starts the vehicle's engine without placing the key in the ignition; and
(2) requires the key to be placed in the ignition or physically present in the vehicle before the vehicle can be operated.

The Toyota factory start in our T4Rs meets these requirements.

Regarding #2, it's awesome here in the summer to pre-cool your vehicle before you get in. But to each his own...

A buddy of mine has a phone app that he can use to start his Acura MDX. He can actually start it even if he is 5 mins away.

That's a pretty bad ass feature on that Acura. The range is really the achilles heel of the factory start from Toyota. There are several threads here on the topic and I don't recall a solution for it off the top of my head.

IMHO this is typical conservative Toyota. They are usually getting pulled (read that as "dragged through the mud by one ear") by the rest of the auto industry when it comes to newer technologies. This is especially true around infotainment and convenience items.

It's a double-edged sword though. Conservative generally corresponds with reliable. I would say that many if not most of us drive Toyotas for that reason alone. I've never had an issue with my factory electronics, but have issues all the time with other manufacturers (I travel a lot which lets me drive a pretty big variety of rental cars).

Good lord, I actually still have the receipt and I realized I paid $60. I guess when you convert that to Loonies it's about the same as what you got quoted.

I'd say more of a darker charcoal grey. Closer to black than grey. I'm sure if you look them up online you can find a better pic. I just don't want to open them but if you think you want them I'll open and text you a pic.
