5th Gen Metal Fab Options and Considerations

In an effort to explore the various aftermarket upgrade options for my 5th gen, I put together this list of common metal fab parts relevant to wheeling/overlanding. This hopefully will help some as a starting point for doing research as they figure out how they want to outfit their rig to meet whatever goals they are trying to achieve. My goals for my rig are centered around medium overlanding capabilities with daily commuter practicality.

I have intentionally left off anything about tires/wheels/suspension/CB radio/lighting/camping gear/compressors/winches/etc. since there are far too many options to list.

I have likely missed several obvious suppliers so please PM me and I'll add them to the list.

Sliders / Rock Rails
Things to consider:
-Not all kits are instantly compatible with SR5/Limited and may require trimming or replacing panels or other modifications
-HREW vs. DOM
-Mounting method: frame weld nut bolted, frame U-bolted, frame welded, frame drilled and bolted, body/rocker bolted
-Protecting the frame vs. rocker panels vs. door panels (bump outs)
-Compatibility with KDSS

Front Winch Bumper
Things to consider:
-Winch size and solenoid location restrictions
-Lighting options built-in and add-on
-Recovery points
-Airbag sensor sensitivity to light impacts while wheeling
-Protection or relocation of washer fluid reservoir
-Overall weight and impact to suspension
-License plate mounting if required
-Approach angle and integration with skid plates

Rear Bumper
Things to consider:
-Hitch design, weight rating, removability
-Swing out accessories like tire carrier, jerrycan, hi-lift mounts
-Departure angle
-Relocating and/or interference with back up camera/sensors, license plate
-Compatibility with roof ladder
-Bumper trim differences between Trail/SR5/Limited, permanent cutting vs. return to stock
-Cutting the cross member vs. bolting to it
-Overall weight and impact to suspension

Roof Rack
Things to consider:
-Overall vehicle height (will it fit in your garage with your current or future lift?)
-Full length, standard length, or basket style
-Mounting points, brackets, methods (especially for full length)
-Dynamic and static weight rating
-Availability and ease of installation/use of accessories and attachments like hi-lift, jerrycan, rtt/awning, lighting, kayak
-Compatibility with the XM antenna bulge
-Center of gravity including what you put up there with respect to highway vs. off highway speeds and dynamics
-Compatibility with a ladder
-Durability, UV resistance, and type of paint

-Quality and corrosion resistance of mounting hardware
-Integration with other parts (sliders and winch bumpers)
-Compatibility with KDSS
-Front (engine cradle), Mid (engine/oil pan), Rear (Transmission/transfer), Gas Tank, Differential, Suspension

Dual battery kit for dual batteries on drivers side using Odyssey PC1200 batteries. May me helpful to those that have the smog pump or people that want to use that area on the passenger side for something other than a battery.

I like this option, if I am looking and reading this right if I go with the batteries they have I can fit 2 where my one is for when i add a winch someday.

Yes. I run that setup. It works great. A little tight fit but it fits where the stock battery was.
 
I like this thread. It would be nice to add similar info about.
- lifts kits
- UCAs
- Typical wheel sizes (width, offset) that work with 33" tires
- Typical Tires sizes
- Typical Tires AT/MT
- Locker options
- Onboard air systems
- Lighting


I know you said there is too many options, but if individuals added suggestions and one person consolidated it would be a great one stop starting point.

Also, you are missing ARB for skid plates.

Added ARB skids. The things you listed are very useful but difficult for me to consolidate especially since I haven't completed my research on them yet and there are already hundreds of threads about them. I'll see if I can update this in the future when I get a chance to look into it (or if someone volunteers to do the research!) Thanks for your support!
