5th Gen more horses and torque with the same engine. How?

I was looking at the specs as reported at AutoBlog and I was wondering how the 5th gen gets 34 more HP and 12 more pounds of torque with the same engine.

I also see that the 2018 reported HP was at 5600 RPM rather than 5200 RPM of the 2008 specs sheet. How much of the HP increase can be attributed simply to the difference in RPM?

Marketing? Where did the numbers come from, the flywheel or tire?

It's not the same engine. Yes both are a 4.0 engine but the engine was redesigned in 2010

I can't speak to the exact specs however I own both a 4th(07) and 5th(16) and I can tell you that the 5th gen has much less power. Both have the V6, the 07 has 125k miles while the 16 has 15k and the 5th gen still feels sluggish. I know the 5th gen weighs a few hundred pounds more plus mine has the 3rd row...but still I'm a little disappointed.

My neighbor bought a '16 TRD Offroad Premium and had the same complaint of lacking acceleration versus his '08 Limited. Cured with a Pedal Commander set somewhere in the median range.

Evidently the fly-by-wire buffer is configured very conservatively on the 5th gen, resulting in lame throttle response.

I've been thinking about putting a Pedal Commander on mine too. I've scared myself though by reading too much on this forum. I'm going back and forth on it.
Edit: Okay, I've been reading more about it now and I think I'm sold on it!

Rented a 5th gen on a work trip out to AZ and put about 300 miles on it. Sluggish is the operative word. Was happy to get back in my V8 2005 model. I know, not apples to apples, but the I would not go out and by a 5th gen based on my rental experience.

The ECM tuning is completely different, not only for the engine but also for the transmission which is the same 5 speed. In my opinion, the tuning is terrible on the 5th gen whereas the tuning feels "right" in the 4th gen. Even with 182k miles on the clock my 4th gen will smoke the 5th gen (111k miles). The 5th gen may have higher power ratings but you definitely don't feel it from the driver seat. My 4th gen has also always returned better mpg. They both have been very reliable which is what really matters in the end to me.

There is. I want to say the 5th gen is around 500 lbs heavier but between my two 4runners, the weight is pretty equal although, I've never weighed them to find out exactly how much they weigh. The 5th gen has an aluminum front bumper and synthetic line winch, some basic tools, first aid and some recovery tools. The 4th gen has a steel plate bumper with an old steel cable warn winch, quite a few tools, CO2 tank, recovery gear, bug out supplies, etc, so it's weighted down pretty good. Still feels peppier compared to the 5th gen.
