5th Gen Spare Parts List for Overland Trip

I'll second the Delorme Inreach. I love mine. Being able to communicate with my wife no matter how far out in the boonies I am really gives her peace of mind, and there's no substitute for reliable communications in the case of a real emergency.

It's also great for overseas travel. Works everywhere.

All depends on what you are doing. If you want to be over prepared, consider these parts.

- 1 Spare assembled CV axle
- 1 tie rod end
- 1 inner tie rod
- 1 assembled hub
- misc consumables like RTV, dif oil, grease

These are by far the most common failures I have seen or experienced on this platform while out pushing the limits.

Diffs and axles are next, but not really worth carrying a spare.

If you are doing the typical over-landing thing... doubt you will have any issues with the truck outside of common things like tires...

I have been solo-ing for 11 years now on 3 vehicles with no problems other than bumpers falling off my Outback, but as our speeds have increased somewhat...I am starting to think along exactly the same lines.

What causes hub issues?

I think CVs, driveshafts are mostly a brain-to-right foot control issue.
I am more worried about tie rod ends. I guided a 4Runner over an awkward rock recently and before I did, the driver was going to push the rock with the steering rod instead of getting the wheel over it. Seems like a long shot but at least tie rod ends are easy to carry. I have the removal tool, too.

Spark plugs and spare oil/air cleaner. If you misjudge water depth you will be needing those. (And oil...).
Definitely a tie rod end.

Ha! Good point. But water is kinda non existent around here...

Correcting my earlier post, I went ahead and ordered OEM tie rods and a boot from the Japanese warehouse (the site that also has a UAE warehouse).

Junk yards only sell entire racks, which is much pricier after core and shipping.

Apparently, CV axles and even rear driver shafts can be found for real cheap from a junk yard, CVs from a GX 460 specifically. Same part number.

All those are very long shots to be needed, but I am now in the mood to have a couple spare parts....

If you use good judgment, you're not going to need much more than the basics suggested above. I would add the following:

-half-inch impact socket for your lug nuts and a real breaker bar / driver
-a rechargeable Li battery pack ($80 on Amazon)
-a 12V compressor so that you can keep your tires at optimal inflation for the conditions
- a quality tire pressure gauge
-12V circuit tester
-Spare headlight bulb

Have a safe trip.

This is a 5 year old thread. Lifestyle Overland has probably put 100k more miles on that T4R up to Tuktoyaktuk, Purdhoe Bay, and all over the southwest US.

We have an overland trip coming up that consists of about 1,200 to 1,500 miles of mostly off-pavement travel. I'm curious what spare parts others would recommend carrying on a trip like this.

What are some common part failures others have seen on their 5th gens during offroad travel?

(I was able to find some fairly extensive lists for other 4Runner gens but nothing came up for the 5th gens.)

Appreciate any feedback.

After 5 years of wheeling and growing a massive YouTube channel, can you now share with us what you would recommend?

Sure would be nice along with a list of what tools are needed other than just saying wrenches and sockets. I have been looking for a detailed list so I can start putting everything together and keep the weight down. But also since he says his locations are only given to his Paetron or what ever it's called you might have to pay to get the information.

I don't see needing one quart of oil. Either your pan is pierced, and you lose a bunch, or not. 5 qts and some epoxy repair.

Radiator stop leak pellets, things can crack.

A belt for sure.

Out in the boonies, two spares maybe. For sure a sturdy board for jacking in loose soil.

Tire plugs. Air. Cables. Fuses. Zip ties, different sizes. Maybe a tool kit. BFH for sure. A tarp or two, they are light.

Any recommendations on which fuse kit to purchase to cover the gammet or regular + mini?
