not to get too much off topic but only the SR5 & Limited has 7" wide wheels (trail has 7.5"). 285 should work just fine and most tire shops will mount them up regardless of the 7.5" minimum recommendation, although you have to your own research on how comfortable you are going outside the manufactures recommendations. plenty of info and talk around here if you search for it.

But, people have been running much crappier 285 width tires on 2nd, 3rd, 4th gens for years. Not with the super dupper 122252xply tires we have now.

My 3rd T4R, traded a 2004 T Tundra, before the Tundra had a 1998 hunter green T4R and before that had a 1991 blue T4R.

The tire that I wanted specifically to fit on the stock rim is a 285/70/17 BFG AT T/A KO. According to BFG that is not possible because it requires a rim of at least 7.5 width. Correct me if I am wrong but aren't SR5 rims only 7 inches wide?

my old 4runner i ran 305/70/16's thats a 33x12.5 on my stock steelies (7" wide) it'll work. i promise

A ton of us are running 285's on stock wheels. I've even aired down to 12-14 PSI on mine for really slippery conditions off-road with no bead problems.

i know its not a 5th gen but in case anyone wanbted to see 285 on oem wheels

Claff, I know that you've pulled your Miata half way across the country for autoX season. Have you encountered any real mountainous terrain? If so, how did the 4Runner handle pulling the loaded trailer?

When we head west (to Toledo and Nebraska) we have to cross the Appalachians in western Maryland/West Virginia. The tranny kicks down to lower gears to climb some of the hills and the motor is pretty loud at that point, but it's temporary and we don't lose a lot of speed. No need to worry about hitting the flashers cause we're dipping down to 45 MPH. You just have to plan ahead heading downhill to make sure you have a running start for the next uphill, and hope nobody makes you get out of the gas or (heaven forbid) hit the brakes because you lose your momentum. It's not life or death if that happens, but not fun either.

Yeah, it's Denver though. Six to seven inches one day, melted and gone the next. Should be in the 60s this weekend.

Definitely. They also come in combinations- 3/2, 2/1. But those are usually shorties.

Its a 4/3 and booties for me pretty much year round out here. Saves a few bucks in not having to buy multiple suits tho I guess.

I guess its colder than I realize out there! In NYC the water warms up to no wetsuit temps in mid-June (my opinion) and stays that way till the middle of October. In the dead of winter you need at least 4mil and a hood to be in the surf or scuba dive.
