Had a 2007 FJ with over 100,000 miles on it
It was time for a change and something with a larger gas tank so I picked up a 2014 SR5. Only real option is 4wd, of course!
I ordered the Baja utility rack almost the same day I bought it and have already put it to good use. I will mod as required purely for utility, maybe.
I'm looking forward to many more camping, biking, running, kayaking adventures:
How do you like it so far? Miss the FJ? Better than the FJ? Just want to hear your opinion

The FJ is a great vehicle with an almost infinite supply of aftermarket gear so you can mod until you empty your bank account and retirement fund. It is funky, with a design that doesn't appeal to the masses. The short wheelbase gives it great maneuverability and fits in a lot of places the 4R won’t. I really enjoyed mine but needs and tastes change so I needed a refresh. The FJ is good for two people and gear, but add a third and it starts to get very tight and uncomfortable for long trips. I do adventure racing, usually in teams of 3, so the FJ stayed home a lot of weekends because it was just too small. Plus, you just feel bad for the person in the back seat. It is hard to get back there with the suicide doors in tight spaces, it is cramped and no visibility … no worries if you are the driver though, haha.
I had the 6-speed manual, which I really liked and wished was an option on the 4Runner. Unfortunately, the gearing with that transmission meant running high rpm on the highway and combined with the aerodynamics of a brick, large MT tires, it meant very poor gas mileage on weekend adventures. Actually, it’s the only car I have owned that got lower gas mileage on the highway than around town. I didn't mind the lower gas mileage, you have to pay to play right, the problem was the 17-18gallon tank (if you top it off, otherwise 15/16gallons) . I had to fill up every 210-240miles, which drove me crazy on road trips and as a daily driver.
With the 4Runner I get the creature comforts that weren’t around in 2007, plus the reliability of the Toyota drive train. I have had to get use to the larger dimensions and automatic transmission. It feels much more “tame” to drive around than the FJ, but I did have OME lift, aftermarket bumpers, exhaust, etc. With a few mods the 4Runner will also give me that feeling that you are driving something a little different.
So far so good, but it is still early days with it and over 400miles to the tank is a good start!
I'm not getting the advertised mileage yet of 19MPG city. Still hoping to do that. Last check was 17, but that was a LOT of stop and go. I'm only at 500 miles though.

Interesting! I was on the edge between the taco and 4runner. I have a 3rd gen 4runner and just love the room in the back. I think the 4runner is more practical if you have a family. Besides, you can always pick up a used 01-04 taco to mess with! THanks!

How true, I got 17.9 in the city and 16 on the highway with a stock 6MT TT. I did not like the first gear, it was useless in the city.

How do you like your new BFG AT tires? I've read tire threads on here until I'm blue in the face. But I've about settled on these BFGs in stock size. Just a little worried about road noise.

It is an added service over there. For an extra $5 a hot blonde chick will fart in your car....I don't get it myself, its just a weird German thing...

i really like the BFGs. very little road noise at all to my ear. i had duratracs on my F150 before we got the 4Runner, and they were a little louder. i ran BFG ATs on my Jeep TJ for a couple of years before i sold it, and they were a great tire on the jeep for the terrain we frequent (not mud)
i wanted something that wasn't too aggressive but has good sidewall strength, and i didn't want to lose too much in fuel economy as we do a lot of highway driving to get to the place where we leave the pavement
(the duratracs were really good in the snow and rain though, just a little more aggressive than i wanted here and don't have the 3-ply sidewall)

Yep, it's out past East Gate Rd off 8th Ave. I don't see much training going on back there anymore though. Just people riding horses......and taking pictures of 4Runner's

Nice. Well if you see a Blackhawk helicopter flying obnoxiously low and fast, give me a honk....when I get back from my deployment in a few months, that is! If I see your 4Runner, don't be surprised if I do a low pass over you!
I've never owned a 4Runner before, but I'm committed to buying a *hopefully* 2015 TE-P with KDSS when I get back. I've already ordered about 8k worth of parts for it!
Haha, that would be awesome! I'll have to keep an eye out now. If you see a white sport bike going way too fast in the same area that's probably me too.
What mods do you have planned for your future ride? Sounds like I might have to check it out when you get done.
