You're right, those catalytic converters get plenty hot enough to start a fire. Years ago at an outdoor concert in AZ, an overflow crowd caused the venue to park the extra cars on an unprepared field. A hot converter started a fire that burned up around 250 cars and the only thing that saved 3000 more was a small dirt road that ran between the two and a calm wind...Mark

2018 TRD Off-Road

My wife and I took a Saturday morning coffee run down near the water. Hadn't had a chance to drive it since bringing home from dealer a few days ago. Love this forum!

Put a rack and ladder on my gfs sr5 that just got a new front end courtesy of being in the bodyshop for hail. Rear 4runner chrome plate got updated to 2018 black as well.

No offense but I think buying the 5th gen. immediately is a bad move. Doing that you are buying it most expensive. You are also buying the 1st kind, so bugs/upgrades haven't been worked out which would be in a year or two.

Buying a new 4Runner is not a bad idea at all. 4Runners have a GREAT re-sale value! That means to buy one that is 1 or two years old will cost close to full price.

But he's not wrong lol. Buying a first year model of anything is risky. Waiting 2-3 years for bugs to be worked out is the smart thing to do no matter what vehicle it is.
