I hear you. I still have my 98 and still love it - 300K miles and still runs and looks great, only been stuck once, and I'll never part with her - she's just been put out to pasture. But technology has passed her by. The offroad capabilities of the 5th gen just surpass the abilities of my old girl. I did a figure 8 on a steep narrow ditch diagonally last night and the KDSS worked as advertised - not a single wheel ever lost contact with the ground or spun. From 12 years of off road experience with my 98, that never would have happened with the old girl.

Plus I am a bit spoiled with all the extras - the locking rear diff, ATRAC, the Iphone docking and bluetooth phone capabilitity, nav system. Heck, my 98 doesn't even have a CD player. I'll admit that the Trail is complex - with my 98 all I had to do when I hit the dirt was shift the short lever to 4H. Now I have to disengage TRAC, disengage VSC, disable the side airbags, put in in 4WD and perhaps activate ATRAC and the rear locker. It's definitely a more complex machine. I hope I get the same service life out of this one as I did my 98 - it's been as close to perfect as I could have asked of a truck.

:iagree: yeah my 99 is still faithful i will never give her up she runs great and yeah no cd but ipod dock and xm radio and sunk first engien went trough to big hole with no snorkle

Thanks - I am using these as an off road set - I have my stock 20's in the garage - just had to put these on to see what they looked like! I think they go really well with the Blizzard Pearl.

My dealer was kind enough to trade them out for the BFG AT's pre-delivery. Cost me $700 net of the trade for the stock tires. I guess they gave me about a $300 credit for the stock shoes. I was pleasantly surprised that they did it, since they're one size larger than stock.

did that $700 include swapping out the spare?

Thanks, but no, it didn't include the spare. I never even thought about it to be honest. I've run those same tires, albeit in the 16" size, on my 98 T4R for 250K miles, and have never run across anything that made one go flat, so I've never had to use the spare.

I paid $720 out the door with lifetime balance/rotate for mine with the trade-in of the stock tires at Discount Tire, so pretty close to same price. Same tires and size,BFG AT KO's 275/70/17's FTW.

Harper, did your deal at Discount Tire include the spare?

Does anyone know the max tire size difference that can be mixed without running into issues? For example, if the spare is a different size and you need to replace a rear tire, I believe you have to be careful that the sizes aren't too different; especially if it's going to be driven more than a few miles with the spare. Something like two different radii wheel/tire combos messing with the differential. True?

The FJ wheels offset is 4.75" compared to the 4.5" of the 5th Gen. wheels, however they are 7.5" wide compared to the 5th's 7" width. So they fit fine.

No ,just the 4 main tires for $720. My spare is a Limited wheel anyways. A special green one at that!

Not sure about the spare size question but you should be alright with one size bigger for short distances.Two sizes bigger and you may have to put the spare on the front.

Hmmm... that will make powdercoating difficult (getting the center caps to match the powdercoating). Thanks for the info, though! They look quite good in silver so I'll probably leave them as is.

I'm sure they would - the SR5 comes with the same stock size tires - 265-70-R17.
