5th gen third member size? Fit 4th gen?

As my rear ring is toasted and I'm searching all over for a replacement I ran across this on ebay. I have been looking all over to find out what the difference is between the 5th gen rear end and the 4th but have come up empty handed. Maybe I suck at searching and am putting the wrong things in the search, dunno. So, somebody with knowledge fill me in please! Will this carrier fit in my 4th gen with the e-locker retrofit?

2010+ have a 8.2" rear third member. I don't believe any components are compatible with a 4th gen. To be positive I would call ECGS.

No. 2010+ e lockers are completely different, even though they have the same external housing dimensions. You would need a 2010+ axle housing.

I figured. Can't be easy! If I could just find a used set for the front and back of my truck in a 4.54 or 4.88 for under $700 I'd be all up on it, but not looking good. I seen some 3rd gen ones, but I think those are different too.

The 8" elocker rear was the same from pretty much the 80s to 2010, the 8" clam shell front was the same on Tacos/4runner/FJC/etc from 03 to now.

$700?? I recently replaced my 3.73 gears with 4.56 Nitros and added an ARB locker to my front diff (already had 8.2 elocker rear). Total was $3,525.00, though I did get back some from the core charges.

Was the 8" V6 (non e-locker) third member constant (as in- direct bolt in capability) from 88(?) all the way through current model? And would this hold true across models? - Tacoma / 4R / FJ? I'm also looking for a donor third member for my 03.

There are differences in the carrier and the size of the pinion bearings, but any 8" third will bolt up to any 8" housing (barring elockerishness). 8" rear axles start in the '79 pickups. Most thirds from before '88 will be the "4cyl" third, which doesn't have as strong a carrier as the "turbo" or "v6" third, but find one in the right ratio and they'll all bolt up.

I think the non-elocker Taco got the 8.4 third, that will not bolt up, you'd have to swap housings (and do a little fab, because the Taco has rear leaf springs). Not sure which one the FJC got.
