5th gen used pricing strangeness

That was over a year ago when he posted that, you should adjust your search accordingly. All the 16's I just brought up are around 30k.

in my area the 16s used with less than 30K miles are more like 32K to 35K and up depending on the model and miles.

thx

Sure, 27-35 is normal for 1 year old 4RNRs, still that's around 10% depreciation in 1 year right?

2016 Toyota 4Runner SR5 $26,998 45,243 mi.
2016 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Premium $27,985 35,789 mi.
2016 Toyota 4Runner Trail $31,999 Mileage: 37,579
2016 Toyota 4Runner Trail Premium $34,448 Mileage: 20,525

yup I agree. What I was trying to point out is that if you are at the peak of your budget they you have to hold to it which I will. the statement was made in this thread that you cannot buy a decent low mileage used 2015 t4 for 30K. your statistics prove otherwise. I have 30k to spend if everything works right. to me thats a lot of money. I'm trying to find the best t4r for that amount, if I'm buying in spring or summer of 2018 then I think 2015 and 2016 are some good model years to look at. Tips on shopping for a used t4 is a whole other thread I'll be starting to research next spring.

For example one I'd look at in your list is the 2016 SR5 premium for $28K and 36K miles. $4K more for the 2016 37.5K mile trail would not be worth it for me.

Certainly, it just seemed like you wanted to disagree with Blitzkrieg's statement. Just saying be more accurate when bring up a dated post and quote against it so people don't get confused. :)

The one's I saw for >26K, two had a previous accidents and the other was only 2WD.

If you only have 30k you need to consider state sales tax, dealer fees, licensing, ect. is going to cost you a few thousand bucks.

Quick AutoTempest search returned
2015 Toyota 4Runner SR5 $23,999 30,259 mi.
2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail Premium $25,996 50,749 mi.
2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited $26,493 44,710 mi.

You already got corrected (glad to see I still got some brothers here that remember me) but seriously dude, don't drag up a year old post that was completely accurate at the time I posted it and try to call bullshit.

First, look at my location. In Denver, CO. 4Runners carry a premium. They always have and probably always will. They are a super high demand vehicle here. It's not Tennessee.

Second, you want to know how good 4Runners hold their value here?

I sold my pristine 2016 Trail with 8K miles through Kelly Blue Book buyers acquisition service to a Ford dealer for precisely $2700 less than I paid for it a year and a half prior. They listed it for MORE than I paid for it new and it sold within a couple weeks.

Now, if that is not high resale value, I do not know what is.

So now that we are straight on the facts, why did I sell it?

To be honest I ask myself that question sometimes. I miss it, but I don't do a lot of offroad driving, work from home so I do not commute and wanted some Uber luxury. So I bought a real nice Mercedes-Benz sedan.

We on the same page?

Just to give another example of price/location.....I'm in southern Oklahoma. I wanted a 4Runner as a second vehicle to haul my dogs in. I started looking/bought in May of this year. What was important to me was 4x4 and low miles. I already knew I did NOT want a Limited. I searched from Tulsa all the way to Houston (I'm right in the middle). I ended up with a 2016 SR5 MGM 4x4 with 25,000 miles. It was a Certified Pre-owned and came with an additional 1yr/unlimited mileage warranty on top of the existing factory bumper to bumper. I got it for $30K out the door. This was the best deal/lowest price for the amount of miles on any 4Runner I could find in 250 miles any direction. This was my first 4Runner purchase and I had no idea I was going to like the vehicle as much as I do. My other vehicle is a 2016 F250 4x4 Powerstroke that is fully loaded with every option available. I was skeptical about the 4Runner. Now, looking back if I had it to do over a again I would have just bought a brand new 2016/2017 Trail. The SR5 is not a lesser vehicle to me. I just like the Trail hood and I'd like to have a factory locker rather than spending on a aftermarket. I do not care about the leather or a sunroof or any of that other shit. Every vehicle I've ever owned has been leather and loaded out. It's not that big of a deal to me anymore. I will probably drive this SR5 for a year or so and then try to sell it and get a new Trail. I've already put some money into this one with the lift/suspension/tries/tint etc......

So I just got mine on Wednesday. Last weekend I called 10 dealerships within 500 miles of Dallas, Texas and told them all the same thing. "I am preapproved and found one trail for 29k. It has more mileage than I would prefer but I am looking for the best deal. I am calling 9 other dealers and the best deal wins." All of the vehicles were under 35k, most of them were between 33k and 35k was the highest. None of them were willing to come down at all. Finally an Audi dealer in Dallas had it for 33,599 and moved it to 31,200. Try to find one not on a toyota lot, because they will move more on the price. Toyota guys know it will sell.

My first 03 was at the dealer with 3k on it and the manager was driving it. $30k SR5. My 2nd I couldnt find anything with ultra low miles worth buying. I got an SR5 reg with 3rd row for $33k and change. Oregon no sales tax, so lower OTD.

I just couldnt justify a used vehicle with 30-50K miles for 3-5 grand under New. I would rather spend the $3-5k and get a warranty, plus make all the damage mine.

I still have my 03 just turned 270,0015 miles today and I hope my 16 turns out as reliable and low cost of ownership as the 03.

Just think if we could get access to the plethora of other Yota's out there, HiLux and various Cruiser platforms from other parts of the world.

What year, trim and miles.

Not sure I got a smoking deal, but I picked up a 16' SR5 with 19k miles for $33.1K. It was a fleet vehicle, but was 100% spotless inside and out, top and bottom.

My only criteria was MGM, 4x4, 3rd Row and Navigation. Couldn't even find a new one locally at the time, then I spotted one at my local dealer when I was getting my 16' Taco serviced.

They were asking 37.8K, and after an hour or so of back and forth with them I got it for 33.1K.

I'm not worried about it being a fleet vehicle. I took it on an extended test drive, and it's solid. 5,000 miles so far and she purrs like a kitten. I'm most likely harder on my $hit than anyone else will ever be.

I picked up my '16 4Runner Limited at the Audi dealer 3 weeks ago. It has 19k on it.

My brother and I went to the Toyota dealer down the street. They had a '16 4Runner SR5 with 30k on it, for $100 less than than the Limited that Audi had. Toyota also had a '14 4Runner with 40k on it, for more than the '16 Limited.

Went right back to Audi and picked up my Limited. Greatest decision of my life.

I have been looking at used 5th gens and I am finding the pricing very odd. I can buy a 2010-2015 for all about the same advertised price, between $27-30k. In fact I can regularly find a 2014-2015 with half the miles for the same price as 2011-2012!

I just went through pricing 4runners (just bought mine, but searched for a good month). What I noticed is that, although the resell value is strong, many sellers are overly optimistic and have too high a price. Why too high? Check the days listed, so many of them were like 80+ days..........that's too long if you are serious about selling a car. Ones that came in at good value, sold rather quickly.

So many of them are mismarked, even by Toyota dealers! People call a limited a trail, or some other trim level mix up. I saw many that said Nav that actually didn't have nav, just a premium radio. 2010-2013 I was seeing them actually sell for $20-26.5k, and 2014+ 27k on up. 2014/2015 Trail seemed to be in the 26-29k and Trail Premium about 32k on up.

Currently debating new or used. We are downsizing from a 09 Yukon XL that we bought new and have driven 207K. High resale is great if you're selling but not so much if you want to buy used.

I just ordered a '18 TRD PRO at my local dealer. They apparently have allocation for two TRD PRO 4runners this year and I took their last one. I would not even consider buying the last year of an aging platform if it wasn't for the resale value history with these vehicles. I personally feel that it defies logic, however I won't complain if it works to my benefit. I see used TRD PROs several years old with significant miles at prices that make me scratch my head. They aren't collectibles in my estimation and unless the next generation is not body on frame, I'm not fully understanding the thought process involved in being a buyer of an used example at the prices they command. As a first time Toyota buyer, if my depreciation curve is as flat as I'm expecting, it will not be my last Toyota. After owning one, I assume I'll start to understand!

Just some words of advice since your looking for possibly a used car, your state just had a massive flood, jokers are going to be trying to sell flood damaged totals in and around your area pretty soon, 4runners being in high demand they will be the first to "repair". So buyer be aware. ;):

The dealership where I bought my 4runner in Arkansas had a 2016 Sand TRD Pro with 30,000 miles for $43K. I paid $39K for my brand new TRD offroad premium.

The resale prices of Toyota 4Runners and FJ Cruisers is a bit crazy in my opinion, but people seem to be paying the prices, otherwise they would not be so high. I think the best deals on used Toyotas can be found at non Toyota dealers, as these are not their specialties, they probably did not offer as much on trade for them as a Toyota dealer might have, and they are looking to get rid of them.

I traded a 2012 FJ Cruiser with 35k miles on it and received $24,500 which was over 80% of the purchase price new on it, from the dealer I purchased it from, when buying a 2017 TRD Pro (paid msrp of $43K plus change and taxes, which were reduced because of trade, and title). The dealer put new tires on it, changed the oil, and likely did the 30,000 mile service on it and marketed it as a Certified Used Toyota for $30,000, which was $1,000 more than I originally paid for it when new. I watched their website for a month and they lowered the price by $500 for each week it was on the website (did not appear on website until a week after I traded it). The vehicle was last advertised at $28,500 before it must have sold. I am not sure what they eventually got for it, but I figured they must have had $25,500 into it after the trade and service they did to it. So they made a few thousand on it, plus what they made on me buying the TRD Pro.

Research Mode

I've appreciated all of the information shared on this thread. Until now, I've lived in the Honda world, but I'm looking hard at T4R for my next vehicle. I want 4WD and good towing characteristics and the T4R fits the bill, and Honda doesn't have an equivalent. I've also moved to a location where the nearest Honda dealer is 80 miles away and my nearest Toyota dealer is 45 miles away which tips the scale even more towards the T4R.

My plan is to purchase a 5th Gen with around 100,000 miles and plan to get good use to at least 200,000. I drive about 10,000 miles a year. The truck chassis is not a concern. I spent 5 years in East Africa on modified suspensions with LandCruisers, Prados (think GX460), Isuzu Troopers, and Mitsubishi Pajeros (think Montero).

Now for the question. I want 4x4, and 3rd Row Seating, after pricing tires for a Limited, I think I'd like to avoid that trim. What range of pricing should I expect since I live in Northeast Nebraska, away from high demand T4R locations? Should I consider a 4th gen? If so, why? TIA
