$600 for a perfect 4runner?

Hi,

I took a 2005 toyota 4runner for state inspection and a maintenance check to a toyota dealer. The vehicle passed state inspection and he said that the last owner spent a good deal of money on it before selling it.

Then he went on to tell me that I should still consider getting :

MPI diff fluids - $160

Induction service - $150

Plugs - $140

Power steering flush - $130

Is this all even needed in order to have my 4runner function well?

140 for plugs??? No wonder they call it a stealership. That's insane.

All that stuff is PM, but it's all stuff you can do yourself.

Tyler, even if you don't know much about cars this list is quite simple. you can drain and fill your front and rear diffs and transfer case yourself it's like changing your oil make sure to use the proper viscosity go synthetic if you can afford it.If you don't feel comfortable doing the plugs ask for help go platinum or iridium to last a long time.pour a can of seafoam in your fuel tank every 3 mos. to keep your system clean and grab a can of cleaner for the throttle plate to get rid of the gunk build up and don't forget your MAF sensor too.i wouldn't bother with the P/S flush unless the fluid is really burnt.

For Plugs, you can go to the parts store, but get ONLY NGK or DENSO. You will probably pull the plugs our and realize that half are NGK, and the other half Denso.

Everyone has thier opnion on fluids. Personally, I use Lucas in my stuff.

For the power steering, use ATF.

As far as the draining, I'm sure if you search there are some posts or YouTube videos on the forum that will detail the steps. Also, check out TTORA for information like that.

I'm probably going to be doing mine here soon, so I can make a write up on how to do it you you'd like.

The diffs and transmission have drain plugs at the bottom and fill plugs near the top.
ALWAYS make sure you can get the Fill plug out before you remove the drain plug.
An easy way to drain the PS steering reservoir is to use a turkey baster.
Make sure you use the correct grade and viscosity fluids.

I called the dealer the other day and ask, how my to change plugs in a 2005 6 cyl. 4runner. He said $340.00 I said are you retarted and hung up.I changed the plugs myself in about 1.5 hours. Easy job

Part numbers for washers and plugs are in the thread as well as info on the gear oil, tools and such. Everything you need is in the thread. You will spend a few $$$ on tools and such, but you will save a bunch of money replacing the fluids yourself.

Definitely pick yourself up a Haynes or Chilten service manual for your rig. You can get them at Napa, Auto Zone, Checkers, pretty much any automotive based store. It will tell you just about everything you need to know. When to do what maintenance and how to do it. Pictures and everything. I HIGHLY reccomend it... Especially if you're not well versed in workin on rigs.
