60k mile maintenance

Hey guys,

my 2007 V6 4runner is just getting to the 100000km (60000mi) mark. So some non-routine maintenance is required I guess. She is mechanically sound and has been taken care of since day 1.

So, what should be done to a 4th gen nearing 60000 miles on the clock?

I have a few things on my list: fluid changes, filters, check brakes, plugs, wires. the belt was already changed once

I have a few questions though, what is the proper way to flush and refill the 4runner's transmission? What is the proper way to bleed the brakes? I'm not sure how the electric booster and the ABS system affect bleeding (im used to basic vehicles)

Am i missing anything??

My 07' V6 4WD just turned 53,000 miles. I changed the plugs last month as I believe they were the original copper type and honestly, they still looked pretty good and had a lot of life left in them even though Toyota recommends changing out the copper plugs every 30,000 miles. There are no plug wires BTW as the coil sits on top of each spark plug.

I recently sold a 97' GMC K1500 4x4 with 160,000 miles on it. I never changed the front diff, transfer case, and rear limited slip diff fluids, nor the transmission fluid. Never had any issues whatsoever. But then again, I never drove the truck hard, towed anything, and only used 4wd five times at most (briefly) over a 15 year period.

I'll change out the front diff, transfer case, and rear diff fluids here in the next few weeks on the T4R just because I purchased it at 51,000 miles last December. After I do, I'll see how bad the gear oil really is and that will help me determine when I should change it out again. Since the T4R's have open front & rear differentials and my near non-existent use of 4wd, I'm expecting to see pretty clean fluids overall. I'll put a magnet in my container of used fluid as well just to see how many metal particulates there are.

I check the rubber boots on the front drive shafts, brake pads and rotors every 5,000 miles when I rotate tires. The fluid in my master cylinder is clear as can be which is a very good sign. I'd only be bleeding brakes if there is a spongy feel in the pedal, if a caliper was replaced, or if your fluid has turned dark brown.

With respect to transmission fluid, from my readings here on this forum, most folks don't change it out till 85,000 to 100,000 miles or more. Again, I guess it really depends on your driving habits or if you tow I suppose.

I just greased my drive line joints last week. It was a simple task and the joints weren't hurting for grease at all and completely full.

I'm a little confused here. Do you have the V6 or V8?

Belt - Do you mean timing belt or serpentine belt? Because this vehicle doesn't have a timing belt.

Wires - There are no plug wires in this vehicle.

At 60K on a 6 year old vehicle I would change the following fluids.

Engine coolant with new thermostat.
Engine oil and filter
Brake fluid
Trans fluid

I would do the following as well besides fluids.

Clean the Mass Air Flow sensor
Throttle body plate
Clean and adjust parking brakes
Replace PCV Valve
Check Air Filter
Check Cabin filter
Grease all U-Joints including the Yoke.


Unless you are pretty anal like myself I would not worry about the rear diff fluid. Not sure if you have 4WD or not.

Do some simple searches on here for whatever item you need advice on. Everything is pretty much on here but it can get a little confusing if you are not real versed in this stuff.

The 4runner is a V6, as stated. (also, its a 4WD) I meant the serpentine belt, I should've specified.

I have fair mechanical knowledge, but I am used to way simpler engines. I am extremely picky with my vehicles' maintenance.

To be a bit more specific:

Engine and driveline oils will be replaced
Coolant, brake fluid and ATF will be looked at, changed if necessary.
All filters will be replaced: gas, oil, air
Brakes will be checked, pads replaced if necessary
Plugs will be checked, changed if necessary (you got me on the wires lol, again, used to basic vehicles)
PCV valves will be checked
CV boots are in check, they were replaced 15000km ago with the installation of new shocks

Am i missing anything??

60k maintenance typically includes:

Lube prop shaft
Replace cabin air filter
Replace engine air filter
Replace engine oil and oil filter
Replace spark plugs
Rotate tires
Inspect brakes

Inspect:
Automatic transmission fluid
Ball joints and dust covers
Brake lines and hoses
Charcoal canister
Drive belts
Drive shaft boots (4WD)
Engine coolant
Engine valve clearance
Exhaust pipes and mountings
Front diff oil (4WD)
Fuel lines and connections
Fuel tank band and vapor vent system hoses
Fuel tank gasket
Radiator and condenser
Rear diff oil
Steering gear box
Steering linkage and boots
Xfer case oil (4WD)

If towing:
Replace automatic transmission fluid
Replace front diff oil (4WD)
Replace rear diff oil
Replace xfer case oil (4WD)
