65+ MPH Vibration Solved?

First a bit of background.

I bought I 2017 SR5 in July. I upgraded to the TRD wheels and Nitto Terra Grapplers and started immediately getting a vibration at 65+ MPH. I decided to lift the runner in hopes of correcting the issue. I went with a combination of a Tuff Country 4" coil spacer lift. Link to lift here Toyota 4Runner Lift Kits | Tuff Country EZ-Ride and also swapped the OEM struts with Bilstein 5100's all around. Now after the lift the truck looked great but still had a nasty vibration at 65+ MPH. I had Discount Tire in ABQ road force balance the tires and it went away for about 100 miles, it sat over night and came back. Very similar to a lot of others I've read. I was able to get rid of both the TRD wheels and terra grapplers and went with a wrangler duratrac 285/70/17 on a Procomp Vertigo 17x9 ET -06 4.75" backspace. They road better but I still had a vibration. Two of those tires were found to be out of round and were replaced. Some of the vibration was gone but came back with vengeance. I the. Switched to the ridge grapplers in a load range c and the ride was worse than ever.

I took the truck to a good forms who is a fabricator for off road trucks etc. he went through everything and suggested I get rid of the spacer lift all together. We decided on an icon extended travel coilover 2010 - Current 4Runner Extended Travel Front Coilover Shock Kit - ICON Vehicle Dynamics We installed the coil over and the ride improved with vibration being removed from the front only. Alignment and ride height were in spec and I drove it around for a couple hundred miles. Well the vibration was as as bad or worse than before so I finally took it to the dealer.

The dealer could not find anything that they would conclude to cause vibrations. I had a good alignment, quality coilver and bilstein in the rear, good pinion angle, greased joints (I did) balanced tires etc.

Dumbfounded I was beat down with this as driving was not enjoyable at all.

In a last ditch effort to try one more damn thing I swapped tires again to the Cooper STT Pro 285/70/17 load e tires and set them at 40 psi.

Initial lower speed was a bit more road road feel in the steering wheel and a touch louder than the ridge grapplers. I hoped dearly that these tires would run smoother and I am delighted to report that my vibration is almost 100% gone.

Logic would say that a heavier tire with stiffer sidewalls and in a mud terrain would not ride this smooth, glass almost with exception of the road feedback.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and speculate that since these tires took almost no weight to balance they are nearing perfect harmonics needed to satisfy this finicky pain the butt truck.

I have many things I'd Ike to add like fully adjustable UCAs and full sized struts in the rear to remove the rear strut spacer, adjustable end links upper and lower to make any adjustments needed as parts start to wear etc.

With the 4" lift, good coil overs giving me great cv angles and now this tire which rid the truck of vibration I smile while driving. If you are looking for a new tire, seriously consider the STT Pro. I hope this may help someone else out as I had almost lost hope... today I won :vader:

Seeing that you have aftermarket wheels, did they do a lugcentric balance rather than a hubcentric? Ask your shop to give that a shot and let us know.

I'm gonna ask my discount tire to do a lugcentric balance in november when i go back and i'll report back to you guys.

Its the power steering rack. Thats the problem. I dont have the time or the energy at the moment to break it all down for you, but I will say, and can confirm, its the power steering rack. But i'm glad you got your issue resolved. Hopefully it will not return.

I'm glad you are happy but you are the first I'ver heard to lift it to try and get rid of a problem :hail: It is the steering rack. There was a customer satisfaction notice or something to that effect for my 2011 FJ Cruiser. I had a 3" toytec lift and the dealer was great wor work with. They actually gave it back to me and said to swap wheels and tires as that was my issue. Sure enough I bought TRD wheels from trdpartrs4u.com and mounted OpenCountryII tires and the shimmy went away for the most part. The tech said the steering rack would take care of the remaining shimmy but it was a PITA to do.

Since the wheels have been installed I've had 108-106.1 hub rings and also ET lugs. They did a road force balance with their new hunter hammerhead machine. There is a 106.1 hub they did the balance on. I will say this. terra Grapplers, duratracs and ridge Grapplers took an insane amount of wt to balance on these wheels. The coopers balance with almost nothing on three of the wheels and maybe 3 oz on the 4th. Wheel runout was non existent as well.

Since I had the 106.1 hub rings they did the balance with the 106.1 hub. It's been done the same way each time... these tires are just better...

The vibration was more cyclonic than a shimmy in the wheel. The steering wheel was actuall dead still. I hope it does not return either...

There's been a few threads I've read saying that a change spring rates, "after market coil over etc fixed it. I just searched "5th gen 4runner vibrations" there's like a hundred threads on this crappy problem... all based around tire change. When I was at the dealer they installed stock wheels and tires and the vibration went down about 80% and with the coopers nearly 95%. As previously stated, it was the tires, its almost always the tires.

Also, remember I tried the TRD wheel / dealer recommended terra grappler and that's when the problem started

Well, the short answer is, replace the steering rack. But the problem with that is that you have to lift the engine up to remove and then install the new one. To get this done by a mechanic will cost a small fortune. I got a quote of 2500.00 just for labor.

Well summama*****, I don’t want any of that, damnit!

I agree with you 100%, but damn, that vibration and wheel shimmy is driving me bat crap crazy. But I'll spend the 2500.00+ on food, wine and women while on vacation first.
