7th Generation 4Runner

Instead of wasting time worrying about what the 6th gen 4Runner (which is already designed, including the mid cycle refresh) will look like and when it will be here let's put some ideas down that might actually be used.

Around 2023 or 2024, the 7th Gen 4Runner will be here. Let's assume there will be a 4Runner still being manufactured. That's 9-10 years away. What will it look like? What will the drivetrain have? What will be some of the features?

Here is a chance to pretend that you are a marketing, designing, engineering genius so get your ideas ready. NOW is the time that input from us would be considered for a new 7th generation 4Runner, not a year before they come out lol.

Remember there are guys whose job is to do exactly what I am asking from you. So look into the future and determine what a 4Runner would be like, knowing it's heritage.

Think back to the 2003 4Runner. How different is it than the 2015? Now take the 2015 and project it out ten years. If there are some serious answers (not rubber floor, V8, burger tray, 37" tires, SAS axle BS) then I will take your thoughts, put them into a document form and send it to Toyota. Everyone always whines and complains when "the man" does things they don't like. Well, here is your opportunity.

- See how this f-150 aluminum turns out, if it is a success for Ford, maybe this can be applied to the 4r to help reduce its fuel consumption.

- Keep it the same size as the 5th gen, I have been reading where some people do not like it being so big, but it is the only one I can fit in comfortably, and it is still a mid-size suv.

- I know there will be effort towards increasing the mpg, but offer some sort of hybrid version, by then hybrid types should be pretty well tested out. I know this goes against off-roading ethics or something, but I really think a hybrid system can be sealed pretty good. Even the military is exploring this now, so maybe some of their findings will be leaking out into the civilian world.

- I do not know about the engine stuff, it would be cool to offer a couple of different engines like Ford does, and let a person pick out which best suits them.

- Keep the boxy look, I hate the egg thing, concentrate on the weight and engine over aerodynamics.

- I like the interior, I like the knobs and the infotainment set up, I hate the all touch screen thing like the Tesla or something.

- Make it where the back seat is easily removable.

Maybe a smaller turbocharged engine (smaller V6 or a big 4 cylinder) which would produce a bit more power, but would be more efficient at highway speed. This, coupled with a 7 speed transmission could raise the fuel efficiency enough that the 4Runner would still be an acceptable alternative in 10 years with the new CAFE standards and general requirements from the population.

and agreed with previous poster: ***NO EGG DESIGN/ WATERDROP DESIGN*** which is the trend, for better aerodynamics. I won't trade beauty of squarish/boxy design for a 5% raise in highway fuel efficiency. If the 4runner goes unibody or waterdrop design, I simply won't buy it.

It will have a turbo charged 4 banger, projector headlights, A/C (not just vented) seats, paddle shifters with a knob (yes, I said it) shifter for "off road modes," most importantly it will have inferno red as a color option for the masses. For a bonus we will get upgraded to Continental tires on 18" rims with fake bead locks because it makes it off road ready. CTV will be our only transmission option. All 5-gen owners will become like v8 4th gen owners and moan and groan about it.

I will be driving my SASed, chopped, mini-trucked 5th gen all over tarnation. That is also after I figure out how to put a Lexus ISF engine into it along with a marlin crawler selective T-case. I'll be on 37" tires because I am a conservative fellow, but I will have custom 3-linked axles driven with D60s. Probably will have upgraded my suspension to 15" travel CO front and rear too. Also, if my wife finds out how much all that cost me... I may be single.

A lot of the technology pieces/gadgetry are obvious and expected. They go without saying. I don't know what the answer is but IMO, I think the biggest thing they can do to maintain or increase sales is delivering this vehicle with a similar size, body on frame, but MUCH better fuel economy. Toyota needs this vehicle to be getting 25-30mpg at 75mph.

Not entirely sure why you want a 2UR-GSE Engine in your 5th gen? Its not designed for the low end torque you'd want in an SUV, its more of a top-end "race" engine in terms of design than a low-end work engine like the 2UZ-FE or 3UR-FE (much in the way the 1UZ-FE was designed more off of F1 engines than the truck designed 2UZ-FE.) I'd rather go for a supercharged 3UR-FE from a Tundra/Sequoia/LC200 (by the way, I have heard the beautiful siren's call of a TRD Supercharged 3UR-FE 5.7L V8 and I popped a boner and a tear at work... .) That's a factory set-up for easy 550ft of torque, even more if you pop in some stronger connecting rods and beef up the lower end a bit.

I'm still working out the details on how to make it fit in the 4th Gen while retaining factory functionality and communications (that's the real difficulty there... )

By that year there is barely going to be any oil/gasoline left, so I'm guessing it won't be the V8 everybody wants... Enjoy gasoline motoring while we still have it.

- Full LED highlights
- assisted tailgate
- option: captain seats in second row
- full sunroof that will go over 1 & 2 row
- option: trunk that will turn into a sleeping bed for two by a quick setup
- place to carry hunting fire arms & fishing roads; similar as RAM BOX
- satellite GPS navigation
- increase the years and miles of the standard overall warranty
- a new trim - "desert running" - raptor like mechanical setup
- interior specific storage for binoculars
- increase the towing capacity
- keep the current ground clearance
- the body style should be an evolution and not a revolution of the current 2015 4 runner
- all weather mats should be standard
- 0% for 60 months financing for current/loyal Toyota Costumers
- 7-8 speed transmission

But think the S/C for the 5th gen will be out by then?
