Hey guys long time no see!
I just bought another 85 solid axle. My 96 is starting to rust and just can't get any money for from selling it.
So I'm thinking 85 frame and axles with 96 body and 3.4 engine

Any input would be appreciated.

Swap the engine, leave the body!

Unless the body on the 85 is toast, then I say go for it!

Ands no pics? Shame on you.

There was a company who did just the opposite, they put the first gen bodies on the 3rd gen frames and engine. Things were sweet!

The issues you will have will be clearing the oil pan with that solid axle, and body mounts plus wiring.

Body mounts shouldn't be too much of an issue if you can weld/fabricate.

BV: that seems like a step backwards. If you want the newer body, why put it on an older frame? Why not find a totaled 3rd gen and swap the body?

I agree with Hyde though. Swap the engine into your 85 and build it from there.

I think the '85 body and front axle on the '96 frame/drivetrain/rear axle is the way to go. Link the SAS to keep it low and tight, and that'd be a sweet truck. Especially if you went to the effort of keeping the 3rd gen interior.

The body on the 85 is mostly gone.
The reason is my 96 body is the 4 door and I like that.
And with enough lift the oil pan will clear ;)
