87 sr5 efi clutch replacement

So I am inthe middle of moving and my clutch has gone. ( i believe) began to lose power, than all gears became neutral. smelled a familiar burning...shoulda never let the brotherinlaw take a ride i guess.

I cannot find a walkthru for this anywhere. I am hoping someone here can help me, because well Im too broke to pay a real mechanic...and i cant go to work cuz i aint got no car!!

If you got good clutch pedal and it will go into gear but it still feels like neutral, I'd say your clutch is good and maybe the trans is toast.
Need more info to help you.

hey thanks for the speedy response. I lost internet for a few days unfortunately....so what else can I tell you? Every gear feels like neutral engine revs. no leaks i can see. lost power as I was driving.

I've done two clutch replacements on the ground now. Once, I used an irrigation ditch (it was concrete) and pushed my old '80 longbed over the ditch using two boards, then worked on it from inside the ditch. The second time was laying on the ground at a friend's house, this was on the '87 truck with a 4" trailmaster lift.

Neither were fun to do, but they were doable and it really didn't take much time to do them. I think it took us a little over an hour to drop the tranny on my '87, pull the clutch, throw the new clutch/pressureplate in, bolt everything back up and drive it home. Helps that my buddy was a mechanic, but its pretty straightforward to do.

Between the videos online and an online toyota manual, you should be able to do this pretty quickly and it shouldn't cost much more than the clutch/pressure plate, a few bearings and maybe some PB Blaster for those stubborn bolts. Metric tools will be required, but you should be able to rent or borrow everything necessary from a parts store. Worst case, go to your local goodwill or salvation army, some of them will have tools for dirt cheap.
