90,000 Mile Service - 08 Sport V6 4WD

Hey folks,

Just went in to a local dealer and had my 90k service done, most of which was covered through an extended warranty I had. Some of the recommendations they made that weren't covered are below, and I'm not sure what should be fixed vs. the dealer just trying to make money off me.

Power steering system fluid exchange (discolored fluid discovered) - $125

Front differential service (dirty/contaminated fluid) - $130

Rear differential service (dirty/contaminated fluid) - $185.98

Replace transfer case (fluids dirty) - $125

Battery Service (corrosion on terminal) - $30

Fuel injection system (suggested every 30k miles) - $75

Clean air induction system (includes throttle body) - $75

A little background: I purchased the vehicle with 80k miles and the service records indicate scheduled maintenance was done regularly with nothing glaring. I'm just unsure of what to do since I'm a newer 4 runner owner. Any thoughts on this would be great. Thanks!

Honestly, I'd suggest that you do most if not all of that stuff yourself. It's all really easy and there are walkthroughs for all of them on this forum. It should probably all be done, but you can do it all for about $100 in materials. That would cover the fluids, wrenches, and a wire brush.

I can't believe they want to charge you $30 to take a wire brush to your battery terminals.

Ok in order:

#1 I don't know if i'd touch that. I have heard other guys do it and their PS started acting up.
#2, #3, #4 - You do these. its not hard and it'll cost you $11 a quart ad you need 7 quarts total. Gear oil stinks like a SOB. So try not to spill.

#5, You do this. it's not hard.

#6, #7 I have never done these and i have two vehicles with a combined 270,000 miles on and they run great.

I can do most of these but how do you clean fuel injectors yourself?

Fuel additives.

Most of the time a shop charges you for fuel injector cleaning they are just adding something to your gas. They don't usually open up the fuel system and mechanically clean anything.

Seafoam and some of the other brand name additives work pretty well.

Our Toyota dealer charges a flat $89 for all those. It's actually almost worth them doing when I factor in the time and materials.

I've watched a few videos and most of the work seems pretty straight forward. I'll be diving into this over the next couple of weeks as I wrap up some home remodeling.
