Hey guys.

New to this forum but not new to this TOYOTA thing.

Member 92 TOY over on YOTATECH, got recommended to come join up here from some of my West Coast friends.

my son bought this 1988 4runner SR5 3 years ago when he was 13. being of very limited technical and mechanical experience, I was going to lear along the way. lots of "buyer's remorse" when he bought it, it was a mess. but very happy to say, now he is 16 years old and his 4runner is ready. I / we felt that he would respect a vehicle that he put a ton of work into, rather than one that mom and dad bought. I believe we accomplished our goal.

have to say we have enjoyed our time with our TOYOTAs.

I have some good experience with my 22re and Joe's 3vze and think I can help out with the limited knowledge I have

very cool to see him and his 4runner grow up to where they are now. I am truly proud and blessed in many ways.

thanks...and it does. Actually, that pic was featured in the YOTATECH calendar. that was the day after we got it running finally at about 1am. kinda like a wrenching hangover (no alcohol involved).

thanks....he did a lot of work too along the way. sometimes, I would need some "alone" time when things weren't going well. Prior to rebuilding my motor 3 years ago, I had no mechanical experience. the 1st time I ever changed my oil myself was right before my rebuild. so, if I could do it...and now do it twice, anybody can do this.

really wanted to post up so you guys would know I wasn't just some lurker....even though that's what I've been doing mostly over the last few weeks.

hey im in the middle of pulling my V6 from an 1989. how the hell did you get the top 2 engine/trans bolts ? i was seriously contemplating pulling the trans too out of frustration but decided to wait and post on here

yeh...those are those are the ones that I cursed the Japanese and their boneless baby hands.

we made a socket reach via a series of 1/2'' impact extensions. lotsa busted knuckles and cursing. much easier to put back together minus the crossover pipe.

Like Jerry said, lots of extensions. At least 3 feet. I had the ratchet itself resting on the crossmember. And I used wobbly sockets so they will sit flush and not round off any bolts. It's a pain. But shine a light down from the top of the motor and you can see the bolts from the crossmember area.

get a good universal socket too....strong fingers help. especially when it comes to getting the bolts back in and you can or are using a wrench.

ya....not sure if we are taking the top off or not this summer.

No build thread. And once you drive it sans top, you'll figure out quick it's one of the main reasons to have it. Pull the sucker. I missed last soft top season since we were selling the house. Not gonna miss this one.
