93' Steering Issue!!

Alright so I went to pick up my 1993 V6 Auto 2WD 4Runner from the collision repair shop today. It hasn't been driven since October of 2009 when I crashed it. I've been saving up for repairs.
Well I was on my way home and evertime I turned the steering wheel, I felt a binding resistance and heard a grinding noise.:wtf:
When I got home I looked at my steering column with a flashlight and saw this:

Is there any way I can fix this??

come on, I need some help. This is my daily driver and it doesn't steer right.

Sorry, I'm no help...I can only see your skateboard logo on my work PC. Tonight I doubt I will have a chance to look at it, maybe someone else can help you diagnose.

Ok, so I have time to look and I see...well, it appears that what you have pictured is just a symptom of what the real problem is. I would have to guess that you have some bent/broken steering and suspension components. It would be a good idea to thoroughly inspect all of your front end steering and suspension. You could have some bent tie rods, or wasted ball joints, maybe even some tweaked control arms. Whatever it is I would get it diagnosed and replaced ASAP. Start at the steering column and work your way down the shafts to the P/S box, keep going until you have covered it all, you should have some obvious bent and damaged parts. If you don't know what you are looking at get someone who does to help you.

I had an idea and I don't know if it would work but... I was thinking of taking off the skidplate and jacking the front of the truck up and then having someone turn the steering wheel from lock to lock and see what was binding.

Do you think this would show me where the problem is or is it hidden under more parts?

Toyota has a factory recall on that problem. You can call your local dealership to get more info. The reason i know this is because Im a mechanic and I have a 92 sr5 thats having power steering problems. I noticed the bulletin on steering shafts wile I was lookin up mine.

really? well I could use a free repair but I was in an accident, so I don't know if they would fix it.

That would work. You can also do the same without jacking it up to find worn out parts like pitman arms, idler arms etc..

If it wasn't doing it before the collision, it's probably a result of it that hasn't been fixed properly by the repair shop.

It was working properly before the collision. It's a long story but I only got minimal mechanical work done because it was for free, but I recently paid for the body work.

I guess the steering wasn't included in the free mechanical work.

(It looks like the shaft that goes through the firewall and dash is either bent or misaligned. Are there clamps that hold this long shaft in? Or is it just one piece with universal's at each end? I couldn't tell by looking under my truck.)

and I know a shop with superior service because I don't want a shop half-assing it again.:biggrin2:
unfortunetly, they aren't open until Feburary 22nd so I can't get an estimate... but I'll see
