95 4runner transmission cooler

okay, from what i can determine either my transmission cooler is clogged or not working as my transmission acts abnormal once it gets really running and will not lock into OD. if i drive out of 'lockup' on the interstate for an hour it overheats.

i am changing the fluid, and need to know where the cooler is - perhaps i can disconnect it and check to see if it is clogged or just some dirty fins that need to be hosed of. if anyone can direct me to a picture - i'd appreciate it.

the truck is shifting more into 'lockup' as the weather gets cooler so i am sure that is the problem. can;t wait for winter :gun5:

The cooler is in the bottom of the radiator. The two skinny lines to the radiator are for the trans cooler. If I suspected a blocked cooler I'd consider bypassing it with an aftermarket cooler. Many 3rd gen guys have completely bypassed the factory cooler with great results.

Lots of good aftermarket cooler stuff here.

well, i bought the smallest transmission cooler i could - luckily for me as i caoul barely fit it inside the grill. i have it mounted in the lower area on the plastic grill guard below the main grill. i used a bypass rather than putting it in-line with the radiator.

the transmission is shifting into lockup perfectly now and staying there. thanks for the suggestion - it was the best $35 i have spent in maintenance. prior mileage was averaging a little over 15mpg. i can't wait to check on the mileage in the next tank - hoping to hit the 18mpg mark overall.

it sure feels a lot better running 1600 rpm at 45mph (my avg speed) than 2200 or so. mileage has to dramatically increase.

i also did the SeaFoam treatment in the intake via the brake booster - running with more response now also. thanks for the assistance/info.

If you were going to buy a transmission cooler, why not get the biggest one you can find...
