96 rear end went out, need help, please

the rear end end went out due to leaking axle seals.
I bought a 1995 by mistake, stupid me!!!!
they do not refund $$ and a 96 rear end costs $700-1000.
Of which they do not have.
I was told by them (junk yard) that you can take the 3rd member out and put in in the 96 rear end and replace axle seals and it would work.
My son who will be doing the work says he does not think this will work as the 96 rear end has imploded (his words). And they are just too different. ???Also has a sensor on the 95 rear end that he is not sure where it would go.
Is it even possible to put 95 parts in a 96 and make it work?
any ideas or suggestion are welcome,

It appears that depending on which model of 95, the differential itself may be the same. In that case, you could pull the differential out of the 95 and put it in the 96. Pull the diff out of the 96 and check for damage to the axles and housing. If they havn't been chewed up by pieces of the diff, then there shouldn't be anything wrong with pulling the old diff and reusing the housing and axles.

Not sure what the sensor is.

when looking at them they just look different. I have a 96 4 door, 3.4 L, SR5.
From reading up they changed the rear ends after 95 and they are made different.
I will ask my son if he thinks that the internals have been damaged.

And what if its not a 4X4?

Well, I gave you a link with tons of information. Use that to figure out which one you have. All the information is there. It looks like there may be a carrier difference, but not sure if there is a difference in fitment,

First off, take a deep breath. You'll come out of this wiser and ok.

I am 99% positive that the rear end you just bought from a '95 will not work. The guts are different than from your 3rd gen 4runner (and mine) from everything I've ever seen on line. If you take some time to search some of these forums you could likely get someone to ship you one for under $300 if you plead your case. Look in the classifieds. People don't normally like to ship them but you might be able to persuade them. You can likely sell the diff from the '95 on here too with enough patience and only be out a few hundred bucks.

According to Erik's website "'86-95 4cyl Turbo and V6* trucks and 4runners, and ALL '96+ 4Runners use the Toyota 8" 4-pinion differential in the rear. This diff is known as the "V6/Turbo diff." I would think you would be fine as long as you are sure the 95 rearend is from a 4runner/truck.

They are the same. Same gears, same lockers available, same bearing kits bla bla bla.
Hey a toy v6 diff is a toy v6 diff. That 95 3rd should work just fine. Considering the gear ratios are the same... And yes that 95 v6 third member has an abs sensor on the top of 3rd and the 3rd gen 4runners have abs sensors at the wheels. SO you have an option. Leave the sensor in it so it doesnt leak oil and cut the wires off it. Or Trail-gear.com sells little freeze plugs that fit the hole just for this issue.

Now the housing will not work. for one its too narrow, the link mounts are in the wrong place ect. But the 3rd it self is mechanically the same
