Hey guys,

New to this site, but have built several yotas. Just picked up a clean 1 owner 3rz 5spd 4runner 100% stock with low miles after searching for months. Current plans:

3" Suspension (bilstein/OME springs front or ???, FJ80 front coils rear)
1-1.5" body
5.29 open front
5.29 ARB rear
Trail Gear sliders - only body protection to try and keep this thing as light as possible
35's - firewall tub and clearance as needed

I've still got some research to do, so will get more specific as the part collection begins. Plan is to have this ready for the next snow season.

Couple initial questions:

I've got a 87 4runner with a 3rz/W56/exo/armor w/ 5.29's and 37's. It does pretty well power wise and is probably as heavy as this thing will be. Anyone have experience running the W59/3rz/5.29 combo w/ 35's in a 3rd gen? Any experience w/ 4.88's?

I'm looking for a good newer toyota rim in a 17" with less than 4" backspacing to clear the stock a-arm with 1.25 spacers. Looks like the newer FJ Cruiser wheel may fit the bill. Any other options?

4runner is going to replace the taco build i just finished. OME/Bilsteins front, Dakaar/bilsteins rear, elocked, sliders, etc. Will be for sale shortly.

Very clean looking 3rd gen and well equipped for a base model too.

I'm no help yet when it comes to the questions you're asking, but I'll be getting my 3RZ W59 4Runner lifted before the month's over.

I'm going with 4.88's becuase the manuals have much lower 1st and 2nd gears than the auto's, so I don't think getting off the line will be too much of a problem, and I wanted to keep the RPM's around 2k at 55. IIRC, the only difference in ratios between the W56 and W59 is the W59 has a slightly higher 5th, so your first gen should give you a decent idea about power.

I chose to go with a 285/75/17 (34x11.5) on stock FJC wheels from an 08. I believe that if you want to go even to a 285 you will need spacers, Ive picked up a set of 1.25, I'm not sure how wide you'll have to go unless the newer FJ wheels are much wider offset. This was mainly to keep the rolling weight down and a smaller contact patch for daily driving.

I've got the Tundra Bilstein 5100's for the front with the TRD Tundra Coils, and the LC 8 wraps for the back with stock LC shocks, I'm also going with a 3 inch BL because I'll be running front and rear plate bumpers and have around 500lbs of stereo in the cargo area, so I want everything to clear without trimming my fenders too much.

Another thing I'll be doing to keep the 3RZ from wasting power is going to a manual hub front-end from a 96 Taco.

Don't get the "sport" 4th gen/late model tacoma 17's, that's the only advice I can give you :o

I'm about to put 4.88's into my 5-speed, so if I get to it before you, I'll let you know how it goes. I have a set of 33's and a set of 35's.

How wide of a 35 are you going with? If its a 12.5, you won't need less than 4 inch BS to run them with a 1.25 wheel spacer. I'm running 16x8 wheels with a 4.5 backspace and Spidertrax 1.25 spacers and the tire clears the UCA by a good 1.5-2 inches with my 315/75/16's

Thanks for the detailed info. I'll be going with a 35x12.50 (kevlar/km2/extreme mt). The more I think about it 4.88's might be a better match, assuming the build stops at 35's. Got a line on some 4.56 (i think, from an auto V6) ARB'd diffs for cheap, wonder if the 3rz will hold freeway speeds.

Thanks for the advice. Keep me posted on the 4.88's, thinking that might be the way to go.

Good info. I'll be running a 35x12.50 and figured i'd be all over the frame/a-arm from what I've seen. Do you rub the frame much with that setup?

Surprise surprise, 3rz owner needs a header. I know about the newer mini header, but want something a little shinier under the hood. I have the LC on my 87 and it opened up the 3rz quite a bit. The new Trail Gear rock ripper is much cheaper though...anyone have experience before I place an order?

Ah, the good old cracked manifold, I've heard the only good header for the 3rz is the LCE, and the rest have their problems, not much out there about the rock ripper yet though.

Yeah it rubs the frame pretty good at full lock but its not really causing any problems. Less backspacing would probably help that but that would also cause more rubbing in the firewall. I think 3.5 or 3.75 BS is probably about perfect for 35x12.50's.

You've got a sick 1st gen and i can't wait to see what you do with the 3rd gen.

Not a big fan of exo's, but I LOVE the exo on your 1st gen! Nice job! You have very good taste, I'm sure your 3rd gen is going to be very nice :surfer:
