97 4runner 3.4 timing problem

I'm guessing you meant to say "sprocket" instead of "pulley", because a chip on the pulley would not make any difference if all was lined up. A chip on a sprocket tooth can be fatal because those provide the signal to the crank position sensor. I only care because if there is someone out there searching this forum trying to find info on how to fix their own problem, it would be nice if this thread had some useful information. So far, there isn't any. A clear exposition of what was wrong and how it caused a fail would provide that.
Didn't mean to flamethrow or start an argument. Sorry man. The sprocket was lined up at TDC but the pulley timing mark shown in the other picture was not at the zero. Someone must've been in there before me because when I took the number one spark plug out and set that piston at tdc the sprocket timing dot was at 6 instead of 12 o clock. Setting the sprocket at 6 made the pulley mark line up and start right up. Thanks for all your help.

Wow, you're giving me a headache. I don't see how that is possible. You're a genius, because I would never have gone there. If that sprocket mark in the pic is at 6, I don't see how #1 can be at TDC--or any other cylinder. #1 and #4 should be at bottom, all the others should be 1/3 or 2/3 stroke and there is nothing to adjust or mis-install. It's just the way the crankshaft is built.

Not arguing, just genuinely curious as to what is going on.

So you are saying that with the crank and sprocket lined up to the mark, if you installed the balancer the timing mark was off? AND it was off by 190 degrees?

Wait, you said the sprocket was chipped and you got one from the boneyard? Because it would not run with a tooth gone from the sprocket. I know, I tried it! That was on a 96 Tacoma with a stubborn sprocket. I put it together not realizing it was missing a tooth and although it would start and almost idle, it wouldn't actually run. As my friend [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION] pointed out, I was 36 degrees off in crank position at that point.

But back to the original question, how did you verify that the damper/balancer didn't line up when the sprocket did? I'm confuzzled!
