97 4Runner Takes Five or Six Revolutions to Start

I just put a new engine (50k mile used engine) in my 1997 4Runner Limited with 320k miles - and it runs amazing!!!

The only issue is that it takes 5 or 6 six engine revolutions to start.

It seems like the fuel is getting pumped from the tank to engine every start instead of holding pressure in the fuel rail after shutoff like it should.
I have no proof of this and there's no fuel pressure connector on fuel rail to prove this to test this theory.

I've seen this behavior on our jeep wrangler in which a new fuel pump solved it. It has a one way valve in the fuel pump to prevent draining fuel rail back into tank.

Here's the details --
Before the engine swap I had put in a brand new Denso Fuel Pump (OEM), brand new OEM Fuel Filter, and Brand new OEM Fuel Pressure Regulator.

On the engine swap it looks like they replaced the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator to the intake manifold. Other than that it's all OEM parts.

I double checked with shop and they used all of my old parts including the fuel pressure regulator.

And, again, the truck runs absolutely amazing.

Every 3rd gen I've seen (including mine, since new) has taken a bit to start. Like, about 1-2 seconds with the key. Just about the time you think something is wrong, bam, perfect start.

Most other cars (including other Toyotas) start faster when they are working...

^^^ this. You would probably have an easier time listing the cars from the era that DO start up right away over ones that don't. The only time I get immediate start up is when the engine's only been off for a few minutes - though I will say when I replaced my starter, there was a couple of days initially where it did start slightly but noticeably faster (as in 1 second compared to 2 seconds) but even that went away pretty quick

Eh, my '89 Camry with a '95 JDM 3s-gte starts up with just a tap of the key most of the time. Less than half the time of the 4Runner, at least. Always been that way...

Mine almost always takes 3-4 turns to fire up, every once in a while only part of 1 turn.

Also in your case engine may just need to be run for a few weeks before it gets back in the groove of things.

Could clean MAF, IAC and some of intake, may help. Luck.

totally normal. Mine does it for the last 200K miles I've owned it. Still original starter and every imaginable maintenance is done.
