97 PreRunner Build 2wd!

So steering is loose, very touch at highway speed. So I looked it appears the tierods are shot, and inners I knew that. But I have a suspicion that there is play in the rack. So...
..how do I rebuild the thing? Is it worth it? Should I just buy a new rack? I need some input, I'm a very mechanically inclined individual who has no issues with rebuilding the old one, just want input on what the best coarse of action should be.

Added some accessible pouches on my seat. Love the setup. Uses my tactical belt to hold goodies. Gopro pouch. Drop mag pouch, and medical supplies.

This truck is going to the mint 400 next month and needs to be tip top for the chase support. So guys, what to do?/:eek:

Just ordered a set of new inner tie rod ends, picking up a set of outers tomorrow. So my rack doesn't leak at all anywhere, but I want to replace as much stuff as possible while in there. What parts can be replaced on the rack besides the seals?? Anything else I can church up while in there?

Wheelers Offroad has the energy suspension poly rack bushings. They help with tightening up a worn out rack. I installed some a few years ago when I bought my 4runner with 216k on it.

Here's the link Steering Rack Bushing Kit for 95-00 Tacoma and 96-02 4Runner

Also, do some searches on here to look up the newer style rack guide for 3rd gens. Supposedly it's a better design, but it's been a while since I remember reading up on it.

I just put a set of brand new Total Chaos rack bushings on last month. They definitely helped a lot. They were a bear to get on..

Just picked up a set of NAPA lower ball joints on sale. Mine are toast, very loose and sketch. Not to mention boots are torn and grease has found its way out, all the way out. So its time today to hit this! By the end of the week I will also hopefully have all the tie rods replaced in time for the General Grabber Red Labels that I have on their way. Then the perfect alignment again.....uh I can't wait

Had a blast over the weekend!// Went to the MINT 400 in Vegas from San Diego with my Friend Justin who has a Built Ranger Race truck, 7100 class. Convoyed with the team out there for the race as a pit mechanic in PIT A.

Had a great time there playing around, and exploring. I had the amazing privilege of piloting the race truck down Fremont street in Vegas for contingency. First time driving a race truck and it was in front of thousands of people too!!/ I was nervous but ended up being right at home. Hands down the coolest thing I have done ever I think. Had a amazing time being in the spot light on the strip. Had a interview with red bull media, and a few others.

We ended up blowing out the motor at RM 36, no compression. Melted the rings or popped a hole in a piston my guess. But it was a brand new SOHC V6 4.0 from a ranger. A real bummer but didn't ruin our trip. I found this dope 3rd gen next to our trophy Titan, had to take a pic.

Loved his rear running light and dust light wing type setup here. Gonna copy this for sure, but make better.

Besides all the exterior goodies it had normal LT from TC on foxes. It was bumped and strapped sitting on 2.0 bumps. Here is it next to out gear:

Once I got home, my fellow team member on The Baja Olive Race Team 7147, hooked a brother up with (4) 315-70-R17 BFG A/T's on titan steel rims. Took them and they fit with my camburg upper a arm, and quarter inch wheel spacers. Just need different lug nuts now. Anybody else running these?? They are a hair short of 35" tires.

Before and after, I like!/

So it's been a few days since I have updated you guys. Went out to the desert for 2 days and ran her hard. Jumped her a bunch, rallied the washes and dry lake beds. Some great stuff out there east of San Diego. We brought my truck, and my friend Shane's truck. He has 4x4 I don't. Not worried. We had a great time, can't wait to get to plaster city to test out the second new motor for the race truck. Heading out to the jimco test track, in plaster city. Here are a few pictures from the Fish Creek Trail, heading west in the direction of Diablo Dropoff.

Today I decided to walk the dog on the federal property housing the naval base here on the end of Point Loma. During a little exploring, something caught my eye, a hatch.

Went over, opened right up, about 8 feet down a room. Being who I am I crawl inside the dark hole, flip on a flashlight..... Abandoned Military Bunker, that has a turret on top. Looks like the defcon 5 war room bunker from 1952. Place has been vandalized, but still contains most of the original equipment. So I took the opportunity to do a photo shoot. Good stuff!

After doing some looking around I'm going to be adding limiter straps with adjustable clevises to my truck. It will help a lot when I air it out, and its going to be needed once LT is installed. I will be getting Camburg LT down the road, since they are one of my teams sponsors. Also found a sweet pic of the rear setup with a nice bump stop and weld on can mount for a 2.0 bump. Stoked.

Heres the idea but mine will be mounted on the otherside utilizing the factory sway bar mount as the lower mount for the strap, until LT.

And of course the rear. Love this setup, I'm going here for sure.

I gotta check that area out down there someday. Awesome landscape! You sure manage to make it around pretty good with 2wd!

Pretty much go anywhere in 2WD out there. The limited had a 4.30 gear ratio in the rear.

I just actually traded the 4runner for a almost race ready ford ranger with long travel camburg beams and bed cage.

I now have 18" suspension travel in front, on fox 2.5 with remote resi's and limiter straps on camburg long travel 4.5 inch over beams. 4.0 V6, with cold AIr, and new heads, pushrods, head gaskets, water pump, radiator, and other stuff. Solid truck with only 165,XXX. Transmission is 5 speed with overdrive, and has a B&M shift kit with custom locking converter switch.

I miss my 4runner, and will probably buy another. But I plan on racing within the next 12 months class 7100, and needed this truck. Sorry guys!!!

Which Fox 2.0’s did you get? I’m trying to find some for my 3rd gen but don’t know which ones they are for the rear. Sick build btw!
