97 toyota 4runner automatic 2wd REAR MAIN SEAL HELP!!

hi im new here looking for some help 97 toyota 4runner automactic 2wd 3.4. im looking forward in replacing my rear main seal and had some questions.

when pulling the tranny...is it suppose to be in P or N?

since im pulling the automatic tranny what else should i be replacing?

i did alot of research on here and feel comfortable doing the job. i have air tools long extension swivels and tran jack.

it would be much appreciated if someone here sends me the right path maybe an old thread with some pics and info. any advice would be great and thx

update after looking through everything i found out that oil was coming from the top valve cover gasket....alot coming from where the cam shaft plugs is...

There are good write-ups on valve cover gasket replacements. That plug in the back is a problem area. When fixing be sure to put daps of the FIPG. Also, don't skimp on that stuff, go to Toyota. It is not expensive. I just did mine a few months ago.

It's all easy.. Pm I can help you trouble shoot it properly. I've done all of the above on a lot of 4runners and its all pretty easy if you a basic wrench knowledge.

one piece of advice is that the drivers side front bolt valve cover bolt, pretty poor design and can snap it.
