'98 LTD T-Case/4WD getting finicky...

I tried hunting for some info on this, but I think I'm confusing myself even more...

My '98 Limited (220K) is OCCASIONALLY starting to not engage/display the 4WD light on the dash when the tcase button is pushed.
I'm not even sure where to start diagnosing this: the switch? solenoid?, ??

As an aside - what is the feasibility of swapping in a far less gremlin-prone
96-98 J shifter case into its place?
I'm growing weary of switches & buttons acting up on me...

I just had this issue. Put it in park and try it a few times. I think it's the front diff sensor. I replaced one of the sensors on the tcase with the pigtail. It's easy to rule out the vacuum, pull the lines down by the vacuum canister and up by the vsv. Canister is in front of driver tire.

No 4wd light on dash, no 4wd even when transfer case lever is moved to 4HI or 4Lo - Expedition Portal

meRockboost thanks for the info!
I had read the second link before, and that's where the confusion started...
I really appreciate the other threads as well. Time to start poking around
