98 Oil Change Issue

Hey all,

I'm new here and would definitely appreciate any advice!

I bought a 98 4x4 auto 6 months ago and it was scheduled for its first oil change so I decided to do it myself. I drained what I thought was the oil, had no problems putting on new filter, and poured in 5.5L of new oil. Checked the dipstick and it was way over but I was told this wasn't an issue. I drove it for four miles and found it was having transmission issues, so I drained what I thought was oil again, and only had about 1L come out.

I did my homework and found I had overfilled the oil and drained the transmission fluid. I proceeded to drain 11L of oil from my tank so now my vehicle has neither transmission fluid nor oil.

Based on some advice I've already been given the new filter will be fine since I only drove 4 miles with the old oil still in the car, however I'm not sure how to proceed. I know about how much transmission fluid I drained so should I go ahead and replace what I drained by pouring the new ATF down the dipstick tube and checking the level after its hot as well as replacing the oil? Please Help!

Shove a funnel in the transmission dip stick tube and fill there. Just make sure you are pouring down the right one and not the oil one...Do NOT drive it anywhere or turn it on until you have fluid back in your transmission because fluid will try to cycle and flow even when in park.

So first things first. Get fluid back in the tranny and motor asap.

You might want to put some oil in the engine before you start it. Drain the crankcase, put the bolt back in, fill with 5.5 quarts of your choice of oil. Check the level after about five minutes. IF the level is OK, fill the transmission with the same amount you drained. NOW you can start the truck. Shift the tranny through all gears several times. NOW check the transmission fluid with the truck running. IF the level is somewhere between HOT and Cold on the stick, drive it and see if the tranny shifts OK. Check both levels again after you shut the truck off.
