98 v6 engine on a 2002

So I just got a 3rd gen about a month ago and I just saw a 02 pop up that I've been looking for. The only problem is that the 02 has high mileage.

My 98 has some low mileage but it's the v6, does anyone know if it's possible to swap the engines out on these? Can I put a 98 3rd gen v6 on a 2002 3rd gen v6?

Any advise would be very helpful, thanks

Yes but you'll need some parts from the 2002 engine to swap over. I don't know the whole list, but I know for sure the throttle body is different. The internals and essential parts, ignition, fuel, bottom end, etc. are identical.

How many miles are we talking?

With these 5vz's the engine is the last piece I'd be worried about having higher miles.

However, if you do insist on buying the 02, I think the best advice would be to drive the 02 until it doesn't run anymore, then look at an engine swap.

Yep, I kinda agree with Alex. Are we talking less than a 150,000 miles difference? (i.e. 150,000 vs. 300,000) I probably would not go through the trouble. If the engine runs well, and it has less than 350,000 miles, I would worry much more about the suspension, hoses, bushings, etc.
Get a 2002 with 250,000 miles and drive it (and maintain it) for another 150,000 miles.

To answer the questions and in addition to what gamefreak has stated the ECU will also need to be swapped as the 02 will have drive-by-wire throttle system that the 98 will not. Injectors too I believe.

The 02 that I'm looking at has 250k miles, and my 98 has 150k... I was originally planning on running the 02 until it died on me which might end up being a while... But Then I thought I could sell the 98 after the engine swap and upgrade the 02 with a lift and things it would need

Aside from the throttle-by-wire, the other big difference is the '02 is California-type emissions, so the exhaust system is different from the '98, including the manifold, and the front sensor which is a wideband A/f sensor as opposed to O2.

If you stay throttle-by-wire, you have to stay Cali-type emissions as well, as there was never an ECU that had TBW that did not use the A/F sensor.

Grow some balls, I guess that you work and earn your money, what about doing whatever you want with it as long as you are making all the required family payments and not spending it on whores.

The 4runner has one of the most praised engine for reliability and durability. I have bought mine at 200K miles, and I consider it just out of break-in, since it was pretty well maintained. You will probably crash your 4runner before blowing the engine.

It's easy to swap a 98 to an 02.
Exhaust manifold swap
AC bracket swap
Motor mount swaps
Air intake swap
Engine harness swap
Throttle body water lines and vacuum lines

Everything else falls in place.

It's easy done plenty of them. No need to swap computers etc..

I was looking up the engine to see what it would cost me and they all say 96-02 so I'm guessing it could be that easy... Labor would be the thing that kills me I suppose
