My 98 with 116K has a leak from the seal of the rear differential housing. One shop states that the axles must be pulled and the diff. dropped to clean and replace the gasket or "perma-seal" with a quote for about $600. Another says they can pull the drive shaft and remove the front cover of the diff. without dropping it for $250. Any advice?

You do have to pull the axles to remove the diff. (it's the same style rear end as a ford 9") I'm not sure how long that takes, but most shops around here charge 65 bucks an hour. My guess is it wouldn't take more than 3 hours with proper equipment. I'd call a toyota service dealer and get a quote.
98 LTD diff leak
I had the same problem with my 98 LTD 4x4 at about 75k I'd say.
My mechanic had the seal 're-stamped' and that lasted about 2 weeks before it went again. Fortunately the second time around it worked out for me.
As I recall it, it cost about 250 or and that was maybe 4 years ago?
