I'm going to look at a 99 4R tomorrow. I own a 2011 Camry and love my car, but I've wanted and SUV (mainly a 4R) as a 2nd car for years. The pictures provided make the car appear impeccable inside and out, and the price is within my current range. The ad and owner have stated that the car has been well maintained, but my concern is the high mileage. It's got ~290K on it credited to "mostly highway" miles. To me, that's a lot of miles for any car, but my dad has a Corolla with well over 200K on it as well, and it still runs like a top. I have a few buddies that are handy mechanics, but with ~290K, is that too many miles for even a well-maintained 4R?

A couple weeks ago I purchased a 99 Limited with 333k, no service records, was dirty and has been off-roaded, minor dents here and there, lifted cheaply with rubbing tires - basically lots of warning signs. But the price was right.
I got it home, replaced spark plugs, did all oils and filters, and greased up some joints, and this thing runs and shifts smooth as silk. There are a few suspension and exhaust noises that I am tracking down but that is to be expected. This is my first Toyota (I drive Hondas), and after working on and driving this thing I have to say I'm very impressed with how well they are made. I've also heard many reports of 3rd gen T4Rs with the 3.4 V6 over 300k or more and going strong.
Long story short - 300k miles doesn't seem to mean much on these things. If the asking price matches the mileage and condition I'd say take it for a drive and I bet you'll take it home.

Honestly, I love these trucks and I don't think there is a better buy out there for the money. However, it does still have close to 300K on it. Anything with that kind of mileage is a gamble. If you can buy it cheap enough, it's probably worth the gamble. If you don't mind me asking, how much is the guy looking to get out of it?

Too much. With documented and up to date maintenance, call it low $3's. Without documentation, call it $2,000-$2,500. There is such a small market for a 300K mile vehicle that she should be willing to take whatever she can get for it.
