99 T4R prob shifting 4x4 on or off unless stoped

Hi Guys!
I have a 99 T4R Limited 4x4; the manual says you can shift in & out of 4x4 at speeds under 50 with the press of a button. This winter it started shifting into 4x4 very unreliably, the indicator light would flash indicating it is trying but it would take for ever to engage. Then that problem went away and now it shifts into 4x4 easily but takes forever to disengage - I have to slow down until almost stopped everytime, not just under 50 mph as the manual says. Any advice is appreciated please...

My '99 has 184k and does its 4WD tricks just fine. Having 256k on the ticker doesn't help but there is tranny maintenance that could help this situation - new fluid, a clean pan, etc.

The solenoids may be limping along in their old age which is more to deal with but the fact that you are getting 4WD actuation is a good sign. Search the forum for tranny threads and you'll find a slew of advice on how to remedy this issue.

Check fluid levels in the differentials, and transfer case.

I had the same issue when I first bought my '02. Turned out there was a leak in the transfer case, up top where the shifter connects. It wasn't empty, but oil was low. Fixed the leak, changed the oil, and it snaps right into 4WD with no hesitation now.
