A Note For Transplants About State Flower

I was born in Texas, been here all my life. Here in the Austin area, we are growing by about 160 people a day so there are quite a few folks who will begin to enjoy the wildflowers that will start popping up in a couple of weeks. Here in TX the official state flower is the Bluebonnet. Ever since I was a kid, I enjoyed the drives through the state during the spring when carpets of blue and violet would blanket the Texas roadsides and open fields. I decided to plant them at my house and they are starting to bloom

All the green plants are budding Bluebonnets. I will post a pic in a couple of weeks when they are in full bloom

I figure most of us on this forum have a respect for nature, and keeping our trails enjoyable without impacting the beauty of the environment is a concern as the wildflowers come into bloom here in TX. When it comes to Bluebonnets it's common for folks to travel and take photos of their families, dogs, etc in patches of Bluebonnets. Here are a few tips for those of you who are planning to enjoys the Bluebonnets this year:

1) Don't trample the flowers to get that perfect shot. This leaves the flowers nice for the next family.
2) Despite popular belief, it is not illegal to pick wild Bluebonnets. It is illegal tho to cross property lines and take pics or pick flowers so be mindful of that
3) Be careful where you park. Most people try to get that pic in patches that are right off the road so be careful as you and/or your family park and walk on the right of way.

Anyway enjoy the Bluebonnets, I think it'll be a great year for em!

Here n Nevada it is sagebrush. There are about 40 different species of sagebrush and no one seems to know which species is the state flower. My guess is that it is Big Sage. It blooms in the fall - yellow flowers. Rabbit brush also blooms yellow flowers at about the same time of the year.

When doing a self recovery with a hand winch, big sage works pretty well. Trees are almost non existent below about 6000 feet. The sage is really tough. You can pull on it without breaking the main stem and the root system is so extensive that it doesn't pull out of the sand.

Being born and raised in Texas I love bluebonnets the bad thing was I grew up in the panhandle where they don't grow wild and we never could get them to grow in our yard. my mom tried for years but it never would happen. We were told our winters were too hard on the seeds. We also didn't have mocking birds and I never saw a pecan tree until I moved to the Abilene area for college.


I'd love to live in the Austin area it's such a neat city with some beautiful smaller communities close by with great motorcycle roads. Also there is UT football. Cost of living down there sux but I'm sure it's worth it.

7 years in Oklahoma and I'm ready to get out but I have come to realize I'm stuck here and this is where I am supposed to be

Yeah I love going to visit other states but I never feel at home unless I'm back here in TX. I'll snap a new photo this weekend as our Bluebonnets are in full bloom. It's raining today tho[emoji19]

I saw some starting to bloom when we were riding in the Chappel Hill area Sunday. Won't be long now...

I'd love to be in the Austin / just west of Austin area as well.

West of Austin is great Dripping Springs, Wimberly, Driftwood areas are beautiful

In SoCal we have the California Poppy. They often come up with lavender and others in fields and foothills. We just had a lot of rain and everything is just starting to bloom. Now all the hills are green and as you change elevation the colors change.

My aunt's best friend lives outside Austin on a small farm and dedicates a good acre just to them. Very nice flower.

Yeah they came in really nice. We have a couple red ones I'll snap a pic when I'm home. I hate the little strip out front. Technically it's city property bit they don't maintain it so I decided to plant Bluebonnets there. I heard someone call it a devil's island? Never heard that before
