A Revo experience

Ok I have not been and overly huge Revo fan since I got them. I think they work well in wet weather and dry weather , marginal in snow and off road.

Well yesterday it was pouring all day and had to drive home from work at the Psyc. Hospital around rush hour , still pouring , people driving like idiots and to fast , lot of water on the roads.

I had to stop from about 40 mph instantly because of some goof cutting in and out . I damn near stood that truck on end stopping. The abs never even kicked in and it stopped in the heavy rain on a dime.

I credit the Revos for that , and thought I should give credit where credit is due .

Mainly I agree with you about the revo's Falls. The do stop VERY well in the rain, and happy about that. Though I've noticed in 2WD, trac and VSC off the little V6 can spin those tire forever. But in 4WD it's also different, I can't get it to slip. I was in a mud field almost a year ago now with the REVO's on. I must say my friend who is a die hard Heep fan and me were really impressed. I was in 4HI with the diff locked and it was fun, I never got stuck even though my friend thought we were going to be. On another note, I got high centered one with frozen over snow (you know when it starts to melt and it rains, then it freezes again) We were stuck and I was late to pick up my GF for a date. I though we were goners and then it just so happened a farmers son drove by and asked if we needed help, we said yea and he said he'll be back. It was then we decided I would try the rocking method, well stupid me didn't want to try it cuz the truck didn't move anyways, so I tried it and it worked. We found the farmers and drove to them and told them thanks for the offer of help and they said no problem. When I parked the car in the garage, man o man was there snow on the ground from the under carriage. about a 12 inch snow ball and alot of other chucks fell. This other time I was at a construction site, on a road only the big machines went on, meaning the tracks were as deep as the tires. I didn't know this till the end and trac control never kicked on. I was proud of the 4Runner. My point is I think the trac control system, in the 4Runner is REALLY good. And that is what I think caused the Revo's not to suck for me, yes I would have LOVED BFG's, but at the time the main driver was my mom, so she wanted a highway tire. Over all the Rev's do a fine job to where they were aimed. Yes the BFG's are better in snow and mud, but those really aren't a highway tire.

Good to hear, thanks for sharing. I haven't had to test mine in the rain...yet.

I hate to even post this but I just want new buyers to get personal experience with both tires. I had the KOs and REVOs on a supercharged 2wd PreRunner and I can tell that the only thing that the KOs did better was low traction off-roading. As far as everything else, wet, dry, light/deep snow, cornering, high speed stability and noise, the REVO were noticeably better. The tread wear was about the same but the KOs traction really deteriorated after 35K miles where the REVOs remained the same. I can remember saying to myself how much harder it was to spin the REVOs in all conditions compared to the KOs. I ran both these tires at Englishtown Raceway (drag racing) and the REVOs would hook up it about half the distance compared to the KOs (Better 60ft times). This is my real world experience; do as please with this info. I'm not trying to get in a pissing contest, it's just my experience.

I will admit that when I had KO's on a 99 Exploder they rode like crap after they wore out a bit , and it was at abut 35k when it started happening. I'm still a fan of them and they never let me down.

I wish I could get a "P" rated tire like the Revo or the GY SA with the 16/32" tread depth , like "C" rated and about come with.

I do like the ride and gas milage with the Revos , I get what I consider excellent for a full time 4x4 V8.

This should be true. BFG AT KO is a compromised on-road, but very good off-road (if you avoid deep mud). REVO is the other way around. It all depends on what you put priority in. And i think that you're the first one to ever use BFG AT KO to drag race!:D

As for snow, i am not sure about REVO's superiority...a few members have commented on REVO's lack of performance in the white stuff.

I have never overly liked my Revos in the snow , although I never got stock ( very close off road snow wheeling )

They are 2 totally different types of tires and compounds and set up for different uses IMO.

I'm not sure of what my next tire will be BFG , GY SA , Nitto .... will probably be the 3 in the running.

I was simply stating a comment on that specific day in heavy rain where they really did there job quite well.

I was not trying to attempt to start a pissin match AGAIN about what is better , drive what you like and you'll be the happiest camper.

Close call last night!

Well, I've had my Revos on for about 15K+ miles and still have lots of tread. I like how they ride on the highway (only marginally louder than the Dunflops?), and are very sure footed and great in the rain.

In my area in Mass. we got about 10-12 inches of snow Thurs. That night I was blasting around in unplowed parking lots with 4HI and then locked the center diff. WOW, it is a beast with the center diff locked! Once or twice without it locked the ATRAC kicked in and almost kept me from moving by cutting power (kinda sucked). It was too easy going through the ~12" of powder so I tried to find deeper snow. A plow had taken one pass through my old high school parking lot and made the right side much deeper. I'm guessing there was ~18" and the runner smashed through that too! It was awesome!

Now on to last night: I was feeling like having fun on the local trails under the power lines. Someone had already been down there and made some tracks. So I go for about a mile with no problem with the center diff locked in 4HI. I see the tracks go down a small hill-type turn around so I figure rather than forge the rest of the trail which I don't know well or try to back up the trail to the beginning I should follow the turn around area. I go down, turn around and head back up. The hill was somewhat steep and I couldn't make it up after several attempts. I was almost making it up to the top but slid a bit sideways onto a Christmas tree like set of pine branches. I was pretty much stuck. With more snow on the way later that night I was frantically shoveling snow from underneath and trying to pull out whatever branches I could. Sombody clearly put this here (maybe for traction to get them out of there?) because there were like small logs and branches all in one spot. They were all up in my wheel wells and under the tranny/center diff, poking from underneath the running boards. I was battling for a while and finally put it in 4LO and rocked the crap of the runner and slid sideways off the branches. Gunned it up the hill next to the branches and drove straight home.

This is going to sound really bad and I'll probably get bashed for it, but I grinded the gears a little going from drive to reverse quickly. It wasn't bad like a standard tranny grinding but, you know, like the sound you hear if you put a tranny into park when still barely rolling. I am pretty meticulous about keeping up my vehicles and generally treat them well so don't hate me! I am new to 4WD and off-roading so I just did what I thought I needed to to get out of a bad situation (I used to rock my standard Mustang out of all sorts of situations which was smooth and quiet with the stick). On the way home I noticed a shimmy above ~45 MPH and I thought I bent a front suspension component or driveshaft. Today I i didn't notice it so I think it was just snow packed inside the wheels. This also happened on Friday after the snow storm when i was going to work. The vibrations were awful from ~55-85.

I'll check the underbody as soon as the conditions get better but the Runner seems to escaped undamaged, except the transfer case "skid plate" was bent up a little; the little plastic piece (which is funny because my buddy's plate was bent DOWN after blasting around in the snow the other day!)

My bad about the length of this post. Basically I was stupid and inexperienced, but the 4Runner (mine being equipped with Revos) is simply an animal in hairy situations.

I must admit though that after 36k on the Revos I've noticed they are pretty damn bad in the snow , great in wet , but after this wear I disagree with its ability in the snow. When I first got then ( winter of 06) they did ok , but I was less than impressed with snow handling. Now that they have 36k on them I seem to slide quite a lot. Last night driving home in a snow storm between the Revos sliding and the VSC kicking on and almost getting rear ended because of it and T boned because of it , sometimes I feel less secure in this truck than any other yet it has a state of the art 4wd system.

4WD system good and bad

Yeah, I hear you on the "state of the art" 4WD. I've read the "VSC almost caused me to get into an accident" posts here and can understand but not relate (thankfully). I think the Revos are noticeably better than the Dunflops in all conditions, but I was expecting a little more. I mean, this is my first 4WD vehicle and coming from having Mustangs for 8 years it's a huge step up in terms of handling crappy weather. I was surprised, though, that last week in ~6" of snow on the highway (somewhat packed) that the truck didn't grip the road better. It seemed like the different "grooves" of snow I hit caused the wheels to squirm all over. It never felt out of control, but there were other FWD cars moving along at ~35-40 MPH with me and didn't seem to be having problems. I'm still happy with it considering my experience last night! I love blasting around in open area or trails where I don't need to worry about other cars, lanes, jersey barriers, etc. I know this is an unfair comparison but my buddy just got an 03' V8 Limited and said it's way better than his 96? GMC Jimmy which had BFG ATs on it! That truck was pretty decent in deep snow too.
