A Silver 4Runner in NJ

Finally I have some time to put this build thread together. I’m not planning an extreme build, more of a expedition vehicle that I can take camping and hunting and work as my daily driver. When I decided I wanted to retire my 2007 Xterra I looked around at a lot of cars and trucks and decided that the 4Runner Trail Premium would fit the bill. It has the 4*4 capability that I want to have available if needed, was decent sized for a daily driver and large enough for the wife and our 2 young kids. I do wish it has a little more power for towing and a touch more room luggage room overall I’m pretty happy and feel it is a nice upgrade from my Xterra.

So here it is the day after I picked it up, I was looking for a red one, but shopping around the east coast trying to finding a red TEP with KDSS seemed near impossible, so I picked up this silver one and have been quite happy with it. This was at the end of May

I picked up some new BRk02 275 at Costco and just really like the look and the confidence in handling, have to list the stock ones to sell, hopefully they will move quickly.

I also installed some cross bars I bought on Ebay.

Changed out the driver side mirror with one I got on Ebay, it was cheap as it is not heated. I wasn’t sure if I really would like it or not but after a day I was sold and I really do like the extra view and look. I just have to find one for the passenger side now. I have all of the photos for my steps so I'll try to post some usable info, but needless to say it was very easy.

I wish there was more internal storage areas, the Xterra had a couple of little cubbies plus a fake trunk area and I used to keep lots of small things in there, so I started building a storage drawer system. I used some idea, inspiration I found online and hacked together some plans. I made a long pocket in the back and shortened the drawers a bit. We went camping l and they really worked well. I have to add the locks and paint but overall I’m happy with them. They took me a lot longer to build than I thought they should have but between job and kids there isn’t a lot of spare project time available.

I also bought a 2016 4Runner Trail from DCH Freehold Toyota.

Who did you work with over there?

I'm quite impressed you got one with KDSS. Was it a factory order?

Thanks it was on their lot, but I had to go to them as they would not transfer it. I searched for one for quite a while and most of the sales people didn't even know what KDSS is.

How do the "E" rated BFG's Ride in the 275 size ?

I'm installing a 2.5/1.5 spacer lift and was thinking of upsizing from a 265/70/17 "C" rated BFG KO2 was the orig plan.

What about power loss ?

I noticed some loss right when I changed from the one tires but not really now. The are slightly louder and harder ride but they handle so much better. I don't have any lift and like the way the 275's fill out the well.

Added some lights to the hatch area

So one thing that annoyed me when I was camping was how dark it is in the back area at night, so since I've now added the Molle panels on both sides I figured it would make an easy place to add some lights. So here you go.

These were some cheap-o Walmart lights for a pick up truck bed, that connect to a trailer plug. So I bought a 12v cig plug and wired them to that. Quick and easy, when I want to use them I just plug them into the trunk 12 plug. If I end up really liking them I'll figure out a way to run an always on wire back there and install a switch. But until I get that creative this will let me see back there when camping.
