A thud when coming to a stop.

So when I come to a hard stop I get a thud and my shifter moves,it also happens when I'm on the gas hard and let off hard makes a thud and the shifter moves. It doesn't seam to be a motor mount I can rev the engine and it doesn't have more then normal movement. And the tranny mount seams ok.

4runner info
Only had it for about 4 weeks

it sounds like the drive shaft needs to be removed and the splines on the slipyoke need to be cleaned and lubricated. Not on mine, but ive worked on several tacomas and 4runners that would do that because the splines on the yoke become dirty/dry causing the yoke to temporarily bind and then "pop" loose. by removing the drive shaft and cleaning the splines, i would pack an ounce or 2 of marine grease inside the input housing where the slip yoke slides into.

Grease the zerk fittings with a grease gun man. Literally did mine today, 3 in the front of the shaft, 2 in the rear. Clunk is completely gone. No need to remove

X 2 on that. My 'thunk' was getting bad. Gave 4-5 pumps to the zirks on all joints/both shafts and no more thunk! If you do a search on this there us plenty of info as its pretty common. 4th Gens seem to suffer from it more though from what I've read.

Yea mine is starting to do this. Just installed my lift and I watched the yoke try to slide and it looked to bind up a little. I need to get under there and lube mine up too.

I've got my driveshaft pulled out now, replacing both U-Joints, so you recommend putting marine grease on the splined connection? There was ATF all over the slip yolk, will the two mix and cause any issues?

Thanks guys I kinda thought this is what it was. I'm just going to make my mechanics fix it cause I'm feeling lazy this weekend and don't have a grease gun.

I have the same issue, and I greased all of my fittings except the one on the drive shaft. Unfortunately, while off roading my drive shaft hits the gas tank skid, and the zerk head broke off leaving just the threads in the drive shaft. I'm going to have to live with the clunk until I can get an easy out in there or I'll have to pull the slip yoke : (

Easy to resolve. Get a drill + bit and slowly drill out. The bit will grab the inside of the zerk and unscrew it. I've done this several times without issues.

Agree with the others, grease the driveshaft. Do a search on the site, there is a very good write up on all the locations of the zerks. This cured my "thunk" right up.

He ended up greasing it for free! But my thud came back... :(

Is there a write up on how the split yoke comes apart? Or does it just pull apart?

So I started to have a light thud, now its feels heavy and when I come off the highway its not till I almost stop. Also seems to be having trouble wanting to go into reverse. And to top that I smell trans fluid, but no leaks at all. And fluid level and color are both OK ... I'm gonna grease what you guys are talking about tomorrow. But I feel like I might have some serious problems

Another thing to check would be your front lower control arm bushings. When mine where shot they would make a pretty loud thud/pop when coming to a stop.

When you are in reverse and back up, then shift into drive, is it a smooth transition? If there is a thud, or is not a smooth transition then it's probly your U-joints.

Good luck.
